A Little Nervous About Cystoscopy

Hi, I am new to this group. On Monday I will have a cystoscopy done in my dr's office with no pain killers at all. That kind of scares me. But I guess waht scares me more is what they might find. I was sent to a urologist after my ultrasound showed a thickening of the bladder. I have complained for more than a year of having bloody urine and pain in my abdomen and back, only to be told time and time again that I don't have a bladder infection and that I just need to exercise more. Now that they have found the thickening of the bladder, it helps confirm in my mind that I have had something wrong. We jsut don't know what it is yet. I would like to hear experiences of cystoscopy and what I can expect and if anyone else had any of my symptoms.

I have my routine cystoscopy on 10/31/06. I have had one every three months for the last three years. All without painkillers.

The pain, for me, is very slight. Little to pay to ensure what is happening in the bladder.

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer, carcinoma in situ, and have been in remission for almost three years following treatment.

The discomfort for a few minutes is worth the knowledge gained.

It is just getting in that is somewhat of a discomfort. I have an enlaged prostate BPH now when they have to get passed that. It hurts, but once in not a problem. Good luck Don

hi, i have had full blone bladder cancer, which needed surgery, i was very lucky, the first investitive surgery found that the cancer had penetrated the bladder wall, this ment i had to have my bladder rmoved, because i was only 55 at the time, iwas offered a neo-bladder or a stoma, i chose the neo-bladder which is a new bladder made from part of my bowel.

i dont wish to frighten you but you must get the bleeding sorted out asp, that is what i started with, ithought i was dehidrated,as the more water i drank the less the bleeding.

i am now approaching 4yrs on, i do have slight incontinance problems, but nothing icannot live with, the first year post op was the worst of my life, i remember crying alot, my surgen made it virtualy pain free. and as for your cyscoscopy, the worst part i find is letting my bladder setle down afterwards,it does get a bit tender and i do tend to leak more than usual,

i do hope that you get on ok, and that they find the problem is not as seriose as mine was, i hope by now you dr will no what is wrong with you and is staring treatment, good luke and my best wishes Terry

I know what you mean about being nervous. I was diagnosed with a low-grade noninvasive Ta tumor on January 3. I went to the ER with blood in my urine. Not only blood, but I was passing what looked like dark tissue. The triage nurse wanted to send me home, saying it could just be stones. But, I knew this didn't feel like stones. So I stayed and that's when the tumor was discovered. I'm 28, and my urologist is still amazed that there was a 43 gram tumor in my bladder. It is very important to get that checked out.

I have had the scope done during my surgery, but of course I was asleep. I had to have a stent put through my left uterer (through my back along with a nephrostomy tube) and I have to get that removed, through the cysto in my urologists office. He used a very rigid tube (bigger than a normal cysto scope). I don't want to scare you (especially b/c if you are just getting looked at, your scope will be much smaller and flexible), but he had to stop the procedure b/c of the pain. Mostly my having to contort my body to take in the stiff cysto. I had no pain killers, just a few Valium before. Now, my urologist has decided to borrow from a hospital a more flexible grasp tool and he prescribed me some Versed, a pain killer classified as a "hypnotic," which should put me to sleep. God, I hope so.

 The normal regular check up cysto, though, from what I hear is quite painless. I shouldn't say quite painless, b/c nothing passing through there is without pain. I hear the most discomfort is when it passed by the prostate. I hope you let me know how your experience went, b/c I have yet to have a (normal) experience on my own.
