Subject: Should i See a Doctor?
Date: 11/11/2006
I am 34 year old female. In the last year I have had a lot of stomach problems. I seem to get frequent stomach pains in my lower stomach. I went to my OBGYN and went through a few ultra sounds and test. There was noting there, he did recommend I see a doctor and ask me if colon cancer was in my family, I said no and nothing more was done. I had my gallbladder removed a few years earlier and ever since then have had frequent bowel movements so I assume that is what it is from.
With in the last 8 months I started having hemorrhoids which was something new, for me. I thought people who got constipated only got this found out that’s not true. I took on a new job about 6 months ago and have been extremely tired all the time and I have assumed this is from the job. I have also been slightly overweight my entire life but in the last month I have lost almost 20 pounds and have not changed my eating habits so I am not really sure how this is happening. My bowel movements are constant almost diarrhea and they happen more frequently like every 20 minutes apart for an hour or so. I can’t even eat with out having to run to the rest room. It is so bad sometimes I can’t make it. I am hardly ever hungry any more and my husband thinks I am starving myself but I just don’t want it. But when I am hungry I eat and have to run to the bath room. I have stomach aces a lot more now also. And have had gas pains and gas a lot more here lately. Which doesn’t make since because I am very careful about what I eat since I have been getting so sick. I started getting a little worried and looked some signs up tonight and it seems I may have a few that are signs of colon cancer.
I read on that having a family history of breast cancer could also increase this. My mom is a 5 year survivor of breast cancer and has several polyps removed over the years. I just don’t know if I am jumping the gun on going to the doctor or not. Guess I just need someone to tell me there opinion.

Hi,You must see a doctor immediately.Your story sounds a lot like mine with the stomach pains and cramps but,not necessarily does yours have to have the same outcome.I also went first to my OBGYN who found nothing but sent me for an ultrasound. In any case I firmly impress on you not to delay going to see a doctor and getting a few tests done.I first had an ultrasound which showed a slight thickening of the colon wall. You say your ultrasound was clear which is positive.I was then sent for a colonoscopy which is where my tumour was found. This was followed by a CT scan.
Surgery and chemo,no eight months down all is well.So get up and go to the DOC to rule out any doubts.

Even though it may be nothing.

I had no symptoms of colon cancer. Don't even have any hemmoroids.

My stomach was upset, as it gets, when I eat foods I'm allergic to. So I went to a walk in clinic to see if there were any new allergy drugs. The Dr. suggested I could get a colonoscopy to rule out IBS, or Chron's disease. But not to worry, it wasn't like I had cancer or anything.

When I went for my colonoscopy, the Dr. tried to talk me out of it, saying it wasn't necessary. And, my insurance would not cover it. But, since I did the prep work, I went ahead.

Afterwards, I found out I had Stage IV colon cancer. Something that probably started when I was 16 years old.

So, I would suggest everyone get a colonoscopy. Just for a piece of mind. You'll probably get a clean bill of health. And, at least you'll know this isn't it. But you may find out you have Chron's or IBS. I was just hoping to ensure that my stomach was upset due to the allergies.

Good luck. If you have any questions about a colonoscopy, feel free to ask.

If you get one, I suggest drinking the stuff with a chaser. And get very soft toilet paper.

Good luck.

Hi Lisa,
You have waited long enough. YES, see a doctor, perferably a Gastroenterologist. The sooner the better. Your symptoms suggest there is something wrong. It could be one of a multitude of diseases which include but are not limited to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Colitis, Stress, and YES even Cancer. You are too young to play around with your health so go pick up the phone and make yourself an appointment. I hope you will find out that your problem can be treated with a change in life style or at worst a little medication. Whenever you have a change in bowel movements that occured for no apparent reason and it lasts a week or longer, seek medical advice. Good luck.
