RE: Weight Gain/loss While on Aromasin

Thanks for sharing the weight lose experience after Aromasin. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, took Famera for 3 years inwhich I experience aches and then switched to Aromasin. I have gained approximately 15 pound and majority is in my mid-area. I have been unable to lose weight even though I exercise and watch my eating habits. My anniversary of 5 years will be this October and I hope to stop taking the Aromasin. I am so looking foward to losing weight after no longer taking the Aromasin.

On Nov 23, 2006 12:00 AM Katkid wrote: I have been on Tamoxifin for 30 months and now am on Aromasin for the past 8 weeks. I want to know if anyone is experiencing difficulty in losing weight. I exercise daily and go to the gym 3 times per week. My diet is organic and has plenty of fiber for breakfast with salads and protein at both lunch and dinner. I cannot seem to drop any pounds. I am not gaining any weight but I work hard to get my weight down. I am wondering if the Aromasin is causing this difficulty with losing weight.Well, I'm horrified, to say the least, that when I researched weight gain and Aromasin that I would find that this appears to be a known (amongst users of the drug anyway) side effect. Considering the dates of the original postings, why isn't this a more widely known fact?
My doctor gave me no forwarning that I would turn into a beached whale when I started this drug. Alongside with the fact that I now, for the first time, am also suffering hot flushes and want to rip off my clothes at any given moment.
For three years I suffered no side effects from the tamoxifen I took - I joked with the doctors that they had given me placebos as I felt no adverse effects! But I should have kept quiet - it was the calm before the storm. I then started Aromasin and cannot believe the effects. I have gained so much weight it is depressing - mainly around my middle and bum. I now work out in the gym 3-4 times a week, swim a little and have cut my food intake down to sparrow feed, yet it stubornly refuses to shift.
I'm trusting you ladies out there from the last decade have now finished your treatment with this drug and are back to your original slim selves? In other words: give me hope!!

I'm trying something new - salad for breakfast and total of 6 cupsof Black tea over thr course of the day. After some investigating, this may help with belly fat. I report back as I notice it helping.

The weight around around the middle is the Arimidex with me. I assume it would be the same with you. I tried 4 different medications. There is quite a bit of talk on this site. I'm sorry I don't have a solution. Hang in their and read some other comment.

Hi Shanita I began on aromasin and the joint pain was horrible. I had tried 1 before and then femara after. All horrible joint pain !!!! The only one I could stand at all is tomoxafen. I just don't like the blood clot issue and female cancer possibility. Everyone reacts differently. I gained wail on both. I have been maintaining, but no where near a weight I am happy with. Mid - section blew up. If you search "foods to help reduce belly", a list is there. Flex seeds, raspberries, coconot oil and more. I have just started so nothing to report yet. Start your day with a very warm glass of water with lemon juice in it. Not to be vulgar, but it gets you cleaned out. Have before anything. Personally, I will try anything. Something must work. I am 53 which doesn't help either.
The urge for ice cream was so unbelievable. After reading all these comments about ice cream, I couldn't wait to tell my husband. Pretty funny. Good luck!

it is interesting to read your messages! i have been on Tamoxifen for the past 18 months and am now being switched to aromasin.
But i have had the same issues with stuck weight with the Tamoxifen. i work out daily and have an all organic , healthy diet.
it is frustrating to be working so hard to get these few pounds off with little results... any suggestions?
and , it is really aroung the tummy and hips....
i am also wondering about joint pain, have you all experienced much of that?
best to you both,
shanitaFirst I have to say, Ice cream has been a joke around here!! Unbelievable how much I can consume. I tried Aromasin and Femara and a third I can't remember. The joint pain was so awful on all scripts that after 3 months I went on the Tomoxifen. Better, but now neck and back pain. I'm afraid of the blood clots and female cancers which are side effects. It's been 11 months and I am thinking about going back on the Aromasin. I want to get to a state I can tolerate and return to work. As far as weight gain, it emotionally is not good. I had neuropathy and the medication for that took away the sweets' craving, but once again another side effect. Severe itching - and I mean severe! Believe it or not, the wieght is getting to me the worst now. Sorry I have no answers, but I'm withy you. Sharing similar stuff helps to know it's a normal reaction. Maybe I should just fast. Just not healthy

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. I was on tamoxifen for about 3 years and then changed to aromasin. I stayed on it until January of this year. It never crossed my mind that the aromasin caused weight gain, but after I stopped taking it, I have lost 12-15 pounds. I could'nt figure out why I was losing weight, but after reading these posts, I think it must have been the aromasin. I did have a sort of craving for ice cream for a while (that's strange, too). I eat right most of the time and starting walking 3 miles a day. BTW, my cancer seems to be gone. Good luck to you all!

I thought I could escape the weight gain, but it seems to be worse now than when I was on the Tamoxifen. I also work out at least 4 times a week and I watch everything that I eat. I am not losing anything and now I have even started a slow gain of about 3 lbs. It is frustrating. I also have seen an increase in my hot flashes with Aromasin. if anyone can help me discover the secret of not gaining weight on this pls let me know .... caryle

Have you had any bleeding since the aromasin? Well, I should have never been put on aromasin, apparently the hormone levels can show a false positive or whatever.. that is probably the main reason my caner returned, I should have been on Tamoxifen AND had a hysterectomy. That was 2 years ago. I just want you to double and triple check with your doctor about your menapausal state. It is worth asking

I was on Tamoxifin for 2 years and was switched to Aromasin and thought I would get off when I hit the 5 year mark. My doctor told me the new protocol was to be on Aromasin for a full 5 years, not a combined 5 years as the previous protocol had been so I will be on meds for a total of 7 years before a chance of getting off and then we will see what protocol is at that point.I was so looking forward to getting off as the weight I had put on was just not coming off and it has added up big time since I started taking the meds.I was trying everything my tired body would allow. I joined a gym and went 4 times a week for a year and didn't lose a pound. I am tired, emotional, grumpy, lower back pain, hot flashes, etc. and the weight gain just makes it worse. I think the lack of energy is some of the weight gain of course but......On 8/19/2008 dellano wrote: On 11/23/2006 Katkid wrote:I have been on Tamoxifin for 30 months and now am on Aromasin for the past 8 weeks. I am wondering if the Aromasin is causing this difficulty with losing weight.I started with Tamoxifin in November of 2005 and after about 18 months switched to Aromasin. From the time of surgery to now I have put on about 10 pounds, and while before breast cancer I exercised regularly, I have not become a couch potato by any means. Fatigue makes it difficult to keep a routine going, but I don't eat a lot and really pay attention to what I eat, but these pounds just do not come off. It is so frustrating. I hate buying clothes. I was so happy to find this site to know that it is not hopeless and at some point - in about 2 years I will hopefully have less fatigue and be able to exercise regularly and lose some of this extra weight. I also have stiffness in my feet whenever I sit still for a while or overnight and last but not least are the hot flashes. Much less now and rather quick to be gone, but usually at the worst moment possible. I have read about other side effects women have and consider myself lucky with only these.

Hi, I too was on tomoxifin for about 2 1/2 years and then started on aromasin since 2007. I try to jog for at least 1 hour 4 to 5 days a week - I thoroughly enjoy this. I try to eat organic as much as possible and try to stick to a low calorie diet. However, there is no way under God's heaven that I can loose one pound - it's like glue stuck on me! I thought I was doing something wrong and yes it's around my waist. I can eat all I want or I can spend the day eating very little and I still weigh the same everyday, everyday, everyday. Frustrating isn't it? Good to know I'm not alone.

I am also on Aromasin for adeno sarcoma for the last 4 months, after 5 years on Megace - have gained at least 30 pounds in the last 6 5 1/2 years. When I went on the Aromasin I experience joint pain in my knees and fingers, and my hands and feet swelled up - and as fast as that started, it went away in about 2 months. I'm still fat, but at least I don't hurt, and I can wear my wedding ring again!Hang in there -- Epiphany

i am also wondering about joint pain, have you all experienced much of that?
