Your Leukemia Story..

I'm curious about what other leukemia patients have gone through with their treatments and ongoing process with their leukemia. Please write back as soon as you can, thank you! 1. When hearing your diagnosis, what was one of your biggest fears? 2. What did you do to deal with this fear? 3. At this point, where is that fear in your life now? Thanks, Alison

I was diagnoised with AML Leukemia when I was two years old. I have been cured from Leukemia now for 20 years now. I am have exstinsive study mainly on AML Leukemia, my eventall goal to is to become a chemo nurse. I am going to school to become a surgical tech. I don't remeber much about my time of sickness, but I know that my care was excellent. I applied for a scholarship awhile back for school, and received all of my medical records from Primary Childeren Hospital in Salt Lake, where I was treated. I am indeed thankful for the information in those medical records and the knowledge I have received from it. I would love to answer more questions for you if you would like.

I my biggest fear was probally that of my parents, where I was just two years old I was unaware of how scary that was, maybe the fact that I felt like crap, was the only way that I could explain it.

I feel that the fear in my life is that I am scared that chances of a second cancer are greater, but let whatever comes right.

Hi Alison:  I was diagnosed back in 1998, so I guess that tells you something about all the advances made in Cancer. I always had a fear of getting Leukemia out of all the cancers, and when I was told I had Leukemia the fear was unreal.  I had myself dying very soon.  I prayed a  lot, and went for second and third opinions as to proper treatment. I have been in remission for 5 years now on Gleevec, but your always afraid when that 6 month test is due to check my remission.  I go next week for my test.  If I am still in remission, its 6 years for me. You can only take one day at a time.  You did not say what type of treatment you were getting.  You wrote your message in Dec., therefore, I am sure you are in some type of steady treatment now.  Hope your doing good.  Suzzie 59

After a routine blood test by my family physician in April of 07,it was recommended to consult a hematologist.I had a bone marrow scan and was diganosed with "Cronic Myeloid Leukemia."Was assured that altho serious,it is much more treatable then in the past.I have been taking Gleevec 400mg,and recent blood tests have been encouraging,as the blood counts have receeded. The inital fact that I have Leaukemia was very scarey, but by researching the subject on the internet,I feel much better to know that with proper treatment and monitoring,I can continue on and hopefully survive for years. The recent deaths of football coach Bill Walsh and newsman Tom Snyder because of the illness was a bit sobering, but at age Seventy five,I feel I`m fortunate to be able to deal with my illiness and continue on to make the best of what I have.
