Hi Everyone,
My mother has cancer of the esophagus. We found out about 2 weeks ago. Her doctors have her going through tests to see if see can have surgery. I am very concerned. She is 75 years old and has copd. She is not in great health. I don't see how she can survive this kind of surgery. If ANYBODY has any information to help please let me know. Her tumor is 2- 3 centimeters and is in the lower part of her esophagus. If anybody can recommend the best place for treatment I would be very grateful. My mother is my best friend and I do not want to lose her or see her suffer. Thank you very much, Patty5
Patty;
I was diagnosed with EC in June. I had esophagram, CT scan, Endoscope and PET scan done. I am 65 years old. All the tests showed that it was confined to the lower part of my esophagus and was classified at State IIa. I went through 5 weeks of chemo and radiation treatment to shrink the tumor prior to my surgery. To complicate things, I failed a stress test and had to have a stent installed in my heart during this process. After all this, I had the surgery done in September. I had the Esophdectomy done with two surgeons, one working at the stomach end and the other working through my neck at the upper end. Everything went well and I was out of the hospital after 6 days. I am currently undergoing the last of some followup chemo treatments to ensure that everything is clear and that I am cancer free. All of this was done at the Carol B. Simon Cancer Center in Morristown, NJ. I feel the surgeons and oncologists are top notch and I would recommend them.
