No bowel movements in 3 or 4 days, cause for alarm?

My mother continues to eat, but has not had a bowel movement in 3, almost 4 days. Is this a sign that things are shutting down??EL

No, but it is something that needs to be remedied quickly. Is she on chemo? If so, and then she gets diarrhea it can cause problems. My mother has passed out when this happens and been hospitalized twice. Now she takes SenekotS and Miralax on a regular basis. She takes 2 Senekot S at night and Miralax (prescription) in the morning. Unfortunately constipation is just a part of the pancreatic cancer that has to be controlled.

Hi, Eva Lyn, My mom had BMs up until 5 days before she died, and then they stopped....I believe she had 1-2 more small meals after that. Things do begin to slow down. You may want to ask the hospice nurse to listen for bowel sounds, and make sure there isn't an intestinal blockage, because if this is the case, you wouldn't want her to have to deal with this backing up. I'm so sorry. I continue to think of you.

The nurse came out and examined mom. Her bowels were still working. She just didn't have enough strength to push it out. She was given an enema and has found releif. The days are hard as we wait by her side. EL

My partner has simalar problems since being in bed a lot. she went 7 days without bowel movment so i gave here a bowl of bananas and pears for lunch two days in a row plus a few glasses of prune juice over two days and that cleared her bowels i always try to use naturel stuff before the medical forms i hope this helps. The nurse said to me that it was fine this way....
