Mass On Kidney

Hi, I am new to this so bare with me.  My husband went for a us on liver and the discovered a mass on his kidney.  He was admitted to hospital, where they ran tests.  The urologist told him that it was a large mass and that usally means cancer.  He wants to remove the left kidney.  He was told that they could not do a biopsy because of the loactation.  We are scared to death.  I do not feel we are getting enough information.  what should we do now.  please help.

You are wise in wondering. But let me explain.

In this crazy world of everyone suing everyone, the Doctors have to tell you the worse thing.

Of course having a mass on your kidney means the removal of the kidney.

If they go in and take a biopsy of the mass, it could leak and damage other parts of the body, if it is cancer. So naturally you do not want that.

Most Urologist will tell you that they have had at least two patients who it turned out not to be cancer.

But do you really want a mass in your kidney creating problems later.

Most mass on kidneys are never detected unless an xray is taken of that area.

I have a best friend whom I have to take to the Doctor Friday June 29, to see the Doctor on when they will remove his right kidney. It was not removed at the time due to his pneumonia.

I am happy to get that mass out of his body because that means it is over and done with, nothing else to fear because all of it is removed with the kidney. It will not spread.

This world is full of people who only have one kidney, some are born this way. They live long lifes.

So my friend, do not be afraid. God will take care of your husband. I just said a prayer for him and for you.

 You don't say where you live, but I would recommend finding a urologist/surgeon who is a kidney cancer expert.  You can usually find these at major cancer centers:  Sloan Kettering, MD Anderson, Cleveland Clinic, Fox Chase etc.  There are many techniques they have now:  nephron sparing surgery, oblation, and they can even remove the kidney laparascopically (my family member had that done at Fox Chase).

 As with any surgery, you want to go where they do a lot of this kind of thing.  You also want to go somewhere where they KNOW kidney cancer and are up on the latest treatments, if your husband needs it.
