Subject: Diagnoised cancer, no symptoms, What can be the worst?
Date: 01/20/2007

I found this very useful site when my husband, age 55,  was diagnoised with stomach cancer a week ago by endoscopy.

The first one was " susppicious for malignancy"

The 2nd one was " poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma with signet-ring cell feature"

CAT scan show thickening of stomach wall.  Other than that, other organs were ok.

There is no symptoms from the stomach.  He feel good and healthy.

They can only tell the stage at the surgery?  He like to have a endoscopy ultrasound done b4 the surgery. How accurate is it?

My questions are:

1) What is the worst stage I can expect?

2) What is the symptoms when u or ur love one was diagnoised? What was the stage when surgery was performed.

I am really scary and like to learn from your experience. I really appreciated if you can sharing experience with us.  Thank you very much.

Hi ssc and jen,

My father also has stomach cancer and was treated at Sloan.  Have you had any weight loss or change in eating habits?  What prompted them to do the endoscopy?  I can tell you that before deciding on whether to do surgery, Sloan will defintely do a diagnostic laparascopy, which is an outpatient surgery.  They will make several incisions in the abdomen and go in with a camera to see the extent of disease in the peritoneal cavity.  They will also do peritoneal washings to test for microscopic cancer cells.  After they receive cytology results for the washings, they will determine if surgery is appropriate.  An endoscopic ultrasound is not considered an accurate tool for stomach cancer.  Most other cancer centers do not test these washings, but Sloan doctors feel it's a critical factor in determining whether surgery can be done.  After the laparascopy, the surgeon will be able to give you and idea as to stage but won't know anything for sure until after the big surgery.  If you have no symptoms and have not lost any weight that is a good sign that maybe your tumor is still small and you wouldn't have to have your whole stomach removed.  I hope that helps a little and please let me know if you have any other questions.  All the best to you.

Irena,

Thank you very much for your sharing.

1)I ate less meat and more vegetable in last 2 years. I lose some wight in one and half years.

 2) I always want to do one endoscopy. My GI discouraged me to do it bc I didn't have pain 3 years ago. I got a new GI and did it.  I know it is not a standard procedure.

Your information really help me a lot so I can prepare for it.  I really apprecate it.  Wish you and your fater the best.

Hi ssc200,

How are you feeling?  Have you been able to see a doctor at Sloan?  I hope it went well and wish you all the best with your treatment.  Please let me know how you are doing.

Hi Irena,

Yes, I did and waiting to see the testing results before operation.  Meantimes, I am taking some alternative medicine and hoping it won't spread too fast.  I feel good and have good appetite.  I will send you a message.

Thank you.

Hi Im new to this but when i googled my grandfathers symptoms, your page came up.  He recently went to the doctor for a ct scan for unusual weight loss. He has lost 15lbs in a short period of time and is not in any pain.  The CT shows a thickening in the stomach wall.  He said it cold be a mass of some sort putting pessure on his stomach and the doctor said he now has to go in for an upper GI which I have read to be a normal procedure for gastric cancer.  I was just curious to know if the same thing happened to someone else? Same problems but no real pain? I am really looking for another problem but with the weight loss and stomach wall growth, theres not to many possibilities.  He is 79years old but is healthy, doesn't smoke nor drink. He exercises 3days a week at a gym, but his brother died a few years ago from colon cancer and he has been going regularly for colon checks for polyps and such.  Any information would be great, I just want to prepare myself for what is to come. thank you very much for your time.
