Subject: Thyroxin...who should I listen to???
Date: 02/01/2007
Can anyone please help me? I am so confused. I am supposed to start my thyroxine (T4) on Feb 4. My oncologist suggests I should start with 50 mg for a week, then 100 mg for a week, and then 150 mg for the following 7 weeks. However, my endocrinologist says that I should start 150 mg right away with a T3 tablet daily. This way I will probably regain my energy and reduce my swelling within a week or two. I don't know which one to follow. The truth is I feel so tired these days (most likely due to my hypo state) I have trouble "climbing" into my mom's SUV and walking. Today I had to go to the minibus station, which is like 5 min away, and I felt totally drained after arriving the station. I am so confused now. My endocrinologist said that the reason why my oncologist wants me to go slow with my meds is because thyroxin can also increase heart rate and tremor. What should I do?

Listen to your endo.  Jump right into the big dose.  If you get jittery, tell your endo and they can adjust your dose.  Some endos even have patients "load" up, taking 2 pills instead of one for a couple days.  I wouldn't recommend that, but I would recommend going with the endo's advice and take the dose you intend to be on.  Being hypo is horrible.

I just finished my RAI and started my Levothyoxin at 150mcg once a day as ordered by my endocrinologist.  I think you'll probably have more contact with your endo in the future, so I'd follow his/her instructions.  Just watch for feeling anxious or flushed, or feeling all "revved up."  If you do, then call the endo to adjust your dosage.

Lots of people here who have been down the road before us to answer questions.  I'm certainly glad I found this website.

I am starting my meds tonight and have decided to follow my endo advice. Actually, my endo is also my uncle. He works in San Francisco and I am living in Hong Kong. However, my uncle says that it would take a while before the T4 acutally works and therefore, I should go right into the 150mg dose and a T3 pill for 4 days. He also said I should measured my pulse 3 times a day just to see how my pulse is doing. I am kinda anxious now...
