Subject: When will the pills start working?
Date: 02/05/2007

Hi everyone

I just started my thyroxin pills (0.15 mg) + 1 T3 pill yesterday. I am just wondering how long will it take for me to feel normal again? I am still feeling lethargic and constant lack of energy...thanks so much

If you get a chance, please read my story "Cancer Again !! Now What?".  What is normal?  Everyone is different so it depends on your body. I think it took me about a month or so to feel normal.  It isn't so bad.  We learn to listen to our body and fight this condition.  It will not get the best of me.  Keep on top with your doctors.  Ask your doctor alot of questions.  Do research and know the warning signs of hyper and hypo thyroidism.  If your like me I went through both symptoms.  I'm weird that way.  If you have a good support system that helps too.   Your going to feel so out of wack till the right dosage is found.  Don't be discouraged let your doctor adjust the dosage accordingly.  Good luck on your road to recovery.  Let me know when you feel "normal" again.  Take Care & God Bless. Aloha, Paulette

I think the pills just started to work. My endocrinologist said my heart rate should go up (if 70 < heart rate < 100, the the dosage is right) when the pills start working. I just measured my heart rate and it's usually 68 and now it's 88. Just wondering will it stay that way all the time? It doesn't hurt but it feels weird to have my heart pumping so much faster...

I felt better after 24 hours, then even better after 48 hours, but they say it takes a few weeks for your levels to get back to normal.

You are right, Char02032. I am already feeling better today. I can walk without my muscles "burning" and can finally finish brushing my teeth without having to rest in the middle of it. I am so happy! My oncologist cleared me this afternoon. She said all my tests come back normal! YEAH!!! However, I am having this headache (at the back of my head), I wonder if it's from the meds I am taking or from food allergies (I am allergic to nuts and had some chocolate that contains nuts yesterday...stupid me).

I could have posted your original message!  I just finished my RAI last week, and started my Synthroid last Friday (150mcg).

I also feel very lathargic, puffy, and my weight is creeping up despite not eating a lot.  I had quite a headache from the RAI, and it persisted for a few days once I got home.  Also, my neck was painful along the sides and at the back of my head.  I was told that was normal, or could be referred pain from the thyroid bed area.

My whole body scan on Monday didn't show any distant mestasis, and nothing outside the thyroid bed lit up, so I am grateful for that good news.  BUT, I have to wonder when I'll begin feeling better?  I was told it may take 6 weeks for the meds to reach their peak.  In the meantime, I feel like I could be used as a float in the Macy's Parade.

Hopefully, I will feel better in a week or two....

Well, I feel somewhat better today, not quite so lathargic.  Maybe there's hope after all!  I'm still feeling a little "float worthy" though!
