Subject: Has anyone heard of a new drug called Nexavar?
Date: 02/13/2007

I was just told about this drug this morning.  My pops has stage 4 liver cancer, and was told last week that he was unable have chemo because his condition was too poor.  Someone just told me about a drug called Nexavar (see http://www.onyx-pharm.com/wt/page/pr_1171263964 ) that was going through stage 3 clinical trials, and the clinical trial organization stopped the trials early because of the success of the drug and the fact that there were low incidents of side effects.  I have emailed several physicians about this treatment, and all have said it looks promising, and agreed about the low incidents of side effects.  does anyone have experience with the drug, what the success rates are, and can give me a run down on the side effects?  I would like to recommend the treatment to my father, but would not do it if it meant that he would needlessly suffer for questionable results.

Don't really know anything much about nexavar. Do have a friend w/renal cell carcinoma and was on nexavar and had a heart attack. He is ok, but I think that may be a side effect.  Look on this same message board under "renal" cancer and there are a couple of postings about it: one on 2/18/7- "sutent before nexavar" and one on 1/16/7 "nexavar". Maybe that will help you some.

Like your father, mine had to stop chemo/radiation treatments due to a low white blood cell count. But during the past week, my dad's oncologist called us to follow up on his condition and he prescribed him Nexavar, assuring  that the drug will extend his survival rate. The drug hasn't come through the mail yet so he hasn't taken it yet. But when he does and results start to show, ill update you will his condition.

Hi. My husband has been on Nexavar since last October after a neprectomy. He has Stage IV RCC (kidney cancer) with Mets to the lungs. Nexavar seemed to keep him in a holding pattern for a couple of months but now the tumors are growing, and fast. He has to have another CT this month and if the growth has not stabalized, he may be switching to a mTor medication that is fairly new as well but has had some good results with advanced RCC patients.

Nexavar does have some potential side effects so read up on them, but everyone seems to tolerate the med differently. My husband did get ALL of the side effects listed with the drug but is toughing it thru...dosage did have to be decreased with him to 3 pills a day instead of 4. So there is some adjusting that can be done if needed, but ofcourse, full dosage would be best if you can tolerate it.

Good luck to you and keep us posted!
