my dad was told he has liver cancer at thanksgiving time. the doctor told me that there was nothing that can be done for him. he said he has less than 6 months to live and that i should just make him as comfortable as  can be. i don't know what all is going to happen to him or what i should be watching for. does anybody know what i can be doing for him?

I have kidney cancer, I don't know anything about liver cancer, but I know this--make sure you have more than one opinion. Make sure you have at least one opinion from a liver cancer specialist--you may have to travel for it, but look into it.

I was told my tumor on my kidney was inoperable. I went to other docs, who had more experience with this particular cancer, and had it removed within a couple of weeks.

I've learned a lot on another list which can be found at www.acors.org. They had trouble with their server, and I think the website is having some problem s, but the lists are working.

When I was first diagnosed with Stage IV in July of '04, I was told I could die at any moment that I had 18 months tops even with surgery by several of the top Dr.s in my city, I knew I had to go somewhere good.  I did and I am still here because of it.

Here is a list of top hospitals put together by US News and World report.  If you live in the US it's a great site.  Go seek as many opinions as you need until you get an answer that you want to hear.

I had stage IV colon with mets to the liver.  My liver surgeon was Dr. Tuttle.

I've also heard that Dr. Geller from the U of Penn is good.

good luck and keep us posted.

I don't know where you are close to but listen to this: my wife has metasatic stage iv lung/liver cancer. She had her diagnosis in Sept of last year with a prognosis of six months. Well guess what sports fans she is still here and her first pet scan was good news - the cancer was knocked back and is dorminant. Don't rely on the first person you see. If we had done that my wife would be buried by now. Also look up a treatment called sir spheres or theraspheres on the internet. It could help you out greatly. Also go to any multidisciplinary facility like MD Anderson in Houston, Sloan Kettering, Cedar Sinai (where my wife will be going) or any the many comprehensive cancer centers scattered throughout America. The doctors you see there will tap into the vast array of talent that is present at these facilities. Also go online and look for Richard Bloch's website. He is the R in H&R Block. He was diagnosised with "terminal" lung cancer in 1978 and he survived. He has an army of good and caring people to assist you who may have had the exact cancer. Just remember: "Never give up, never give in, and never give out." Only god will let you know when it is time.
