Experience with Oxaliplatin (Eloxatin)

After what was thought to be a very successful Whipple back in May of 2006, I now have metastic cancer with the pancreatic cancer having spread to my lungs.  Notwithstanding the fact that I feel good and continue my regular routine including exercise, my chemo was just changed from Gemzar once each week to Gemzar on Monday and Oxaliplatin Tuesday both every other week.

While it is unfortunate that pancreatic cancer remains data poor and consequently is pretty much relegated to the "try this medication for a while and if it doesn't work, try something else" method of approach, I continue to remain hopeful.

In consideration of the foregoing I was wondering if any one has had experience with the above chemo which consists of Gemzar and Oxaliplatin and therefore would very much appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks.

Kendel,

My husband was dx May 30, 2006, stage IV inoperable.  He is now on his 18th cycle of Gemzar and Oxaliplatin.  His protocol also includes Erbitux.

Each cycle is two weeks:

Week #1 - Monday he gets infusions of Gemzar and Erbitux.  Tuesday he gets Oxaliplatin.

Week #2 - Monday he gets Erbitux.

He's taken only one week off since starting his fight.

Most importantly, the disease is stable and the tumors show signs of diminishing.  (He has hundreds of tumors, studding the peritoneal lining.)  He has tolerated the treatment well with minimal side effects.  In fact, he experienced no side effects until a couple of months ago.  Now is coping with fatigue, mild neuropathy, and a rash on his face and back.  None of which have kept him from working full time and maintaining a fairly normal level of activity at home.

We just pray that it remains effective!!  Best of luck to you.

Gael

Hi Gael,

WOW!!!!!

That is great news and I am so happy for you and your husband.  The information you provided will light my path as I continue on my journey of hope.  Overcoming the challenges of pancreatic cancer are much easier when you know that the course can be navigated.

Thank you so much for your reply and of course the great news about your husband. Your good news and your experience are not only enlightening, they are enabling, empowering and energizing. I am indeed grateful that you shared your experience with me.

Please accept my sincerest wishes for your husband's continued success and that the best of the past is the worst of the future.

Sincerely,

Kendel
