Subject: a diet that seems to work for stomach cancer patients
Date: 02/25/2007
My husband has recently had  total removal of his stomach and 1/3 of his esophagus. He was on a j-tube feeder from June to January...not a great way to live, but after about 7 weeks of horrid mucus and lousy retention, I seem to have hit on a diet that has stemmed the weight loss. If anyone is interested, I will be glad to share....anytime! Carrie

I am very interested on the diet. I had surgery 12-26-06 and was on a jtube until about a month ago. I am losing so much weight I have to go back on it at night. It seems like some foods are fine, then sometimes  the next time they bother me. I am afraid to get too far from a bathroom when trying something new.

thanks,

Katrina

It is involved, so bear with me! First off, the constant diarrhea really had me going as he was getting j-tube feedings and ingesting 2 boost products daily and didn't seem to have a problem with it. After the removal of the j-tube, I'm afraid I got carried away with too much sugar in his diet. He was eating way too many sweets. I started out trying to see if eliminating any foods would help, and still he continued with the bathroom as his best friend.  Then I remembered that with the sessation of the feedings, his iron levels were down, and also remembered that as a younger woman, when it was recommended I take iron, I had a terrible time getting into the bathroom if you get my drift..so, here's what I came up with.  (first thing is meds and if they will interact well. Here is what he takes: 1 attenolol, 50 mgs; 1 generic CVS 24 hour allergy pill which really helps with the mucosal discharge and 1 ferrous sulfate tablet, 325 mg. these three pills at 8 pm.

Diet: I make homemade applesauce weekly. 10 granny smith apples with 1 cup sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. He eats this cold with all three reg. meals.

Breakfast:

1 egg soft scrambled with 1 Tbs. whole milk, 1 Tbs. grated cheese, all done in butter 1/2 Tbs./1/4 cup applesauce and 1 frozen pancake nuked tor 30 seconds with margarine and syrup.

Mid-Morning snack:

1/2 banana and begin 1 boost (he has all day to finish the boost.

Lunch:

1/2 18.8 oz. Campbells meat soups..he doesn't seem to want chicken, but they have a ton of beef and pork soups out there.1/4 cup applesauce, 1/3 medium avacado and 6 bacon flavored crackers.

Mid-Afternoon snack:

1/2 banana or homemade muffin (he loves blueberry and you can make them really economically with the envelope mixes and 1/2 cup whole milk.

If he has room, he will eat 2 nabs...peanut butter between two ritz crackers.  He can usually get this down pretty well sometime before dinner.

Dinner:

1 1/2 inch slice of spam, 1 serving spoon of a soft veggie like english peas or carrots, 1/3 avacado, 1/4 cup applesauce and1/3 cup mashed potatoes or 1/4 cup mac and cheese.

After dinner he will eat the muffin or nabs that he didn't get before, or he can have 1 Kraft pudding cup.

Mid-night snack.

I make a smoothie with 1/2 large can sliced peaches with heavy syrup included, 1 cup frozen yogurt and 1 cup milk. He gets that about 10 and drinks it throughout the night. So far it is working.

Anything else comes up, I'll let you know. The only fear I have is that when he goes to his personal physicial this Friday she will take him off the Iron pill. I don't know if this is what eliminated the retention problem but I have a sneaking idea it is.

Good Luck, Carrie

Thanks for the infor, I will try this. Does he have trouble with acid reflex?  I am just now getting to where I can sleep in the bed, but have gotten on medicine for it. I am wondering if it will be a constant problem.  I guess alot of this is just mix and match and see what works, and I will definatley try yours.

Bless you both!

Yes he did, but here is the wierd thing...we tried gas-X every time he had pain, but contrary to what the dr's. told us, a small (2 Tbs.) pepsi or any carbonated drink would allow him to belch and that relieved the pain. He takes it during one of his 3 meals, during eating, and it hasn't caused him any bathroom problems and gets a ton of relief. It doesn't seem possible that you could have stomach acid without a stomach. The pepsi is 1/2 flat, but it works.  Also, put some flavoring, vanilla, etc., in the smoothie.
