My mother did several cycles of the Nexavar/Interferon combo when she was first diagnosed. It did work very well for her, she had a lot of side effects though. Interferon can cause flu like symptoms, hair loss, and fatigue. Although her worst complaint was blisters in her mouth and sores on her hands and feet which were from Nexavar. If I am not mistaken, her first scan when she was on the combo showed a 50% shrinkage in all of the tumors (liver, and lymph nodes between lungs). She is being treated at Duke and her first oncologist actually developed Nexavar for Bayer. He has since taken a job heading a research facility in NJ, so she is with another oncologist now. They are positive that the combo therapy is going to be the biggest breakthru in treating RCC. It does seem to shrink the tumors faster. The problem that we had was that after several months of the combo, she was to weak to continue both drugs. So they put her just on Nexavar. That worked for about 6 months, then on to Avastin, now Sutent. It is a tough combo, but it does seem to work pretty well! If I can help with any more info, just send a private reply and I will answer any questions you may have. I hope the combo works well for your loved one!! Keep me updated if you dont mind.
