I had a Whipple procedure in February 1998 (I live in Rio de Janeiro) to remove an adenocarcinoma of the Vater ampulla. I remember I stayed about 10 days in hospital (ICU), returned home and about 2 weeks later and was readmitted with a pancreatic fistula. 2 further surgeries (1 and then another 2 days later). I don't remember anything about the fistula surgeries. After that, I stayed about 10 days in hospital. All the time with a parenteral feeding tube. About 3 months later I had a bile by-pass procedure, because of constant bile refluxes. In fact, the bile refluxes began again and I would still be getting them if it were not for permanent antibiotic treatment (axetilcefuroxima 500) begun last year to suppress a urinary infection (E-coli) that probably started about the time when the tumor was growing, causing bile refluxes, bronchoaspiration and bacterial pneumonia. Otherwise, I am leading a normal social & professional life and doing aerobics. No dietary restrictions, other than to avoid putting on weight. No signs of cancer recurrence.
