My son was diagnosed last May at the young age of 39 with Stage IV colon cancer. He started on FolFox plus Avastin and after two treatments suffered a bowel perforation. It was not thought that the Avastin was the actual cause of the perofration rather it was a tumor that necrosed and pulled away. Therefore, after two treatments the Avastin was restarted. We were happy that his tumors were regressing. After about six months, he developed significant neuropathy in his fingers and toes and the Oxaliplatin was stopped. He remained on Leucovorin, 5FU and Avastin until last month when it was determined that his tumors were progressing. He started Erbitux and Irenotecan last Monday and on Thursday suffered another bowel perforation. Fortunately, they were able to find the perforation and repair it. I am with him in the hospital waiting, hoping, and praying that his bowels will wake up and he can eventually restart treatment. It is thought that the perofration was caused again by a tumor necrosing and pulling away. He has multiple liver mets but unfortunately some peritineal seeding as well. I am devasted by these new events and so afraid for him. Has anybody experienced this? Can anyone offer any hope? I suspect the peritineal mets may be more of a problem that the liver mets. I don't post here offer because I feel I have little to offer anyone when I am so devasted most of the time or frantic to find something to cure my son or prolong his life. I do read though of the brave battle that many of you are fighting. If anyone can offer a bit of hope of inspiration, I can use it now. God Bless all of you who are fighting the horrible, horrible disease.
