My mom was diagnosed with NSCLC 2-1/2 years ago. Did not want surgery nor chemotherapy, however she decided on radiation therapy only. After 8 weeks of therapy, the scan showed very little tumor remaining. For approximately 8-9 months, my Mom had no symptoms at all, however, in December of 2007, she began to have discomfort in her chest. There were scan taking throughout that 8-9months showing nothing, and in January 2008, the tumor began to grow again. We went to see an interventional radiologist at Johns Hopkins. In fact all of my Mom treatments and have taking place a Johns Hopkins. After the radiofrequency ablation, she came thru fine, the dr. indicated he aimed for the center of the tumor. After 3 weeks Mom had a scan and the tumor appeared to liquify in the center. During this time, starting in December, Mom walking was getting worse, she now requires a pronged cane, and refused the rolling walker. I asked if her legs, knees or feet hurt, reply - no, and does not know why she is bending her legs to walk. My Mom is 84 year of age, and lives in a senior community, independent living, and continues to participate in the activities. Mom will have a brain scan
in June. The radiation/oncologist believes this is warrented, because of her unstable walkiing. After reading all of the accounts of family members on this site, and because Mom does not know why she can't walk straight, I'm thinking brain met. I hope not. Tje drug Tarceva, is it only available to those non smokers? Unfortunately, Mom smoked for over 50 years of her life.
