Mersa Staff Infections (MRSA) even without cancer are very - very serious infections.  MRSA is commonly picked up in hospitals and medical facilities.  The only input I have is my having a serious infection in my port area (not as serious as MRSA) - I spent 5 days in the hospital on antibiotic drip and felt much stronger when the meds were completed.  However, my medical oncologist chose not to take my port out until the infection was completely cleared up - he didn't want them cutting into the infected area.  If your father-in-law can get through the MRSA he may rebound health wise.
