Unfortuanetly, metastatic melanoma does not have any really effective treatments. Officially, only IL2 and DTIC, but their impact on survival is minimal. How old is he? If he is willing to fight, clinical trials are an option and a number of new targeted and biologic agents are showing promise. A new biologic agent, as well as 2 new immunotherapeutic drugs now in trials, have the potential to be the first agents approved by the FDA for use in patients with stage IV melanoma in over a decade.
My aunt was diagnosed with mucosal melanoma in Nov 2005. She is stage 4. She had much success with Taxol and Avastin for 12 months. She in now on Gleevec. Radiation has no effect on melanoma, we have been told. Good luck and God Bless.
