My dad has been on tarceva for almost 3 months. He is doing pretty well considering this ishis 5th chemo since diagnosis in 2006. We are hoping that he can move to a lesser dose 150 is the highest per day.  He has had issues, but the doctor has also wanted to pair it up with celebrex.  There are other chemo pills that may work better for your dad.  Since tarceva is a slow response chemo, the doctors have told us that it requires a full 3 months prior to deciding that it is not working or for some side effects to dissappear.  our doctor also said that he had several patients that had been taking Tarceva for over 2 years after being given a death sentence of 6 months for advanced stage cancer.  I hope this is helpful.  I guess ultimately he has to decide for himself whether or not to take it.  Sometimes the quality of life is far more important than the quantity.  Maybe your dad's doc can explore other avenues if that one did not work well.  We are currently exploring other avenues to decrease severe side effects.  6 small meals seems to be the best solution.. and a protein shake for breakfast and before bed.... with carnation instant breakfast and resurgix.  Maybe he can try that.  I hope the best for you and he both during this challenging time.  you aren't alone.  hang in there
