My grandmother had the wipple precedure in may 08, she is recovering but continues to be weak & has nausea & vomiting. It will be 2 mo. July 6th. Is this normal in the recovery process? what can we expect?Does anyone know. Also her blood hemoglobin is still low 8.4. Does anyone know how long it takes to recover from this precedure, my grandmother was very independent & active before this Any info would be appreciated. Thankyou KIM S.

Is this really necessary?

So I just found out yesterday through a Biopsy, that I have moderate to severe dysplasia. They want me to do the LEEP procedure. The doctor told me there is a chance that my body will cure itself (because I'm only 21 she said I have a better chance) But I'm scared about taking that kind of risk with something that could turn into cancer. I did some research and there is a good chance if i were to get pregnant(if my cervix doesn't get scarred)that I would deliver premature if I follow through with this procedure. There are so many things in life I want to do and having children is number 1 on my list, granted it wouldn't be anytime soon, but I have to think about my future! Is this something that I really need? I plan on getting a second opinon, but there are so many questions I have, and so many if's **Blah**

Post esophagectomy...advice

I had an esophagectomy for a non-malignant tumor 7 weeks ago. I have had difficulty finding information on the net as well as support. I am posting here as many of you have experience with esophagectomy. While I count my blessings every day that it was not cancer (originally thought it was until path came back), I find myself frustrated with difficulties finding things to eat, nasuea, sleeping positions, need for medication to prevent nasuea, choking episodes, and difficulties with consuming liquids. I am 36 and was in good health prior to this. I did not know prior to my surgery that I would have an esophagectomy, but it was necessary as my tumor had gone through the wall. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it.

Hello, I have neuroendocrine carcenoids. They have done extreme damage to my heart valves. I have had several doctors tell me that if I do not have them replaced, I will not live a year. I have scheduled surgery in about 2 weeks. Is there anyone who has experience with this issue? Can you tell me about surgery cautions--things that happen during heart valve replacement because of the carcenoids, etc. ?I was diagnosed about 18 months ago and have done well so far using the sandostatin shots and a lot of herbal supplements. Thank you for any information you can share with me.

My fiance has been doing therapy on his jaw - started after he had the modified radical neck dissection. Yesterday his doctor told him that he isn't satisifed with the jaw mobility - he said he may have to have jaw surgery and would discuss this with him in 6 weeks. Is there anyone out there that has had jaw surgery after having the modifed radical neck dissection? We would appreciate any response. Thanks so much and God Bless...

I had half of my colon removed because of a cancerous mass. The incision is in the belly button area. I have been exercising since the operation (February 2007). I am now performing 2 hours of exercise including walking 1.5 hrs, stretching .75 and weight lifting .5. I am left with a pocket of fat aroung the cut area, about two handsfull of fat. Here is my question. someone told me that "if I have been cut, I can forget about flattening my belly since the muscles will not respond normally". I do 200 slow crunches a day. Is this person correct??? thanks in advance. dave

Rectosigmoid colon resection - Terrified!

Hi all: I don't even know where to begin. I'm scheduled to have removal of the rectosigmoid colon & 5cm mass in rectal wall on May 3rd and I am absolutely terrified. I'm only 30 and have never been hospitalized before. The colon is very inflamed & has narrowed considerably, and then there is issue of the mass. Biopsies from colonoscopy & transrectal ultrasound were negative for cancer, but my surgeon says he will not know until the pathology report details what is going on.I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's had a colon resection - ie how terrible was the surgery, how much pain were you in afterward, how long did it take you to get back to your normal routine, etc. I feel like I have no real understanding of what to expect when I wake up. I'm also terribly afraid of having a temporary colostomy (which dr says is unlikely, but is a possibility, depending on what he needs to do when he opens me up.)Thanks in advance for any responses. I'm so worried I can barely focus.

Husband Had His Surgery

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers the last couple of days. Husband had his surgery on Thursday around 4. He was out and in his room by 8 pm. He felt pretty good except for a real sore shoulder. Had a good night and Friday daytime was good he was out walking, but Friday night hit and he was miserble. He was so bloated that they took him down to x ray just to make sure everything was okay. It was ,they told us it was just part of the recovery for this type of surgery. Anways they gave him a shot to get things moving and he pretty much slept the rest of the night ( not me! boy are hospitals noisy!). But today he felt great. The bloaty feeling is leaving, he had a shower and we walked and walked. Left him tonight with my son so I could come home and take a bath and sleep in a bed! He only passed gas once so far but he's still on clear fluids, and jello. He is so hungry. Doctor said tumor was small, but we won't know till pathology comes back next week sometime. So once again we wait. But I think now that we have passed this stage I think he's ready for whatever God has in store. Thanks again everyone, just know you are all in our prayers also.
Spinal Tumor Surgery

I have breast cancer that has metasticized to the bones, and had radiation three years ago for it. Now a CAT scan shows a possible growth of a tumor in the vertabrae which has been radiated so they can't treat it again. However, i have few symptoms, no pain, and just a little tingling. I have read a bit about the surgical treatment of spinal tumors and would like to hear from anyone who has had that procedure. We're still not sure, I have a PET scan set for a week from now.
Carcinoid Tumor Stomach Removal

I was recently diagnois with carcinoid tumor in the stomach and metastatic to the liver and a spot next to the spleen. The surgeon feels it to be in my best interest to have stomach surgery and lymph nodes removed. also burn the metastatic spots out of the liver with radiation. I am concern about the out come and long term effects. I am other wise health and a active 58 yr. old male. The surgeon wants to start me on shots 3 times a day for now for treatment of flushing, stomach discomfort and some occasional diahrea. Has anybody had this procedure? I am being treated at the NNMC in Bethesda.

Wipple Procedure

My husband just had the Wipple Prodedure done in Aug 2005. The mass was precancer but he will have to be screened for the rest of his life. He is now 4 weeks into recovery. He is depressed and has lost 20 pounds. He can not sleep and is starting with muscle spasms due to his bad nutrition. He tries to eat but the pain that follows scares him to try and eat again. He had the sugery done at UCLA which we were grateful for but we were sent home with no real instructions. He was given no restrictions on diet or how to handle what may happen during recovery. We too heard the 3 month recovery. He was told he can return to work 6 weeks after surgery or before if he has the energy. I cannot see this happening. I refuse to let him suffer without help. I have found this site and I am thankful to read about the experiences of others. He is 56 years young and played soccer 3 times a week prior to surgery. I am determined to see him get his active-life style back. Caregivers, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Amputation

My husband (36 year old) has just been diagnosed with a reacurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma. Thursday will be his 4th surgery. Each time it has been in the same spot on his left leg. However, with this surgery there is no way to save his leg.

So I am wondering if anyone has been through this kind of an amputation. We are in MA and we are getting 2 different recogmendations for rehab. We just aren't sure what the best choice is. Some say Spaulding. So say they are too big and we should look at Whittier (which is also closer to home). I'm just not sure which is best for his whole recovery and it is beginning to look like this is going to be my decision. I'm just afraid I'm going to make the wrong one.

Biopsy Scar Tissue?

i had an excisional (left) breast biopsy with
needle/wire localization 6/27/05. today is
7/24/05. when i raise my left arm above my
head, there is what looks and feels like a
thick cord going from the bottom of the scar
(at the base of my breast) down about 3-4
inches to the bottom of my rib cage. it is in an
exact line. i went to my doctor and he said it
was scar tissue. really? i understand about
the scar tissue in and around the incision,
but this "cord" (scar tissue) hurts when my
arm is raised and it hurts all the way down to
my rib cage. my rib cage feels bruised. i just
want to know if it really could be scar tissue
3-4 inches away from the actual incision.
thank you.

Whipple surgery

My husband had a Whipple done following diagnosis of bile duct cancer. After resection of his pancreas his blood sugars can be high in the evenings. They are always fine in the mornings. Our doctor says he is not worried as long as they are OK in the morning. But I am concerned about them being over 200 in the evenings. It still seems that would be hard on his body. Does anyone have any experience with Whipple surgery? Or blood sugar monitoring? He also has to take pancreatic enzymes with meals or he has malabsorption problems. They did not give us any dietary guidelines but it seems he should be following a low fat diet.
