MY HUSBAND

Hello eveyone my name is Eva. I am 23 and my husband is 27. We just found out 02-12-07 that my husband has rectal cancer. They call him the "rare case". We just got home yesterday from a 3 week stay at a hospital. My husband was admitted because he had uncontrolable bleeding coming from the tumor. He has to receive 11 blood transfusions. It's very hard on my heart to watch im suffer like this. I have been on the phone with his insurance co. (hmo), his medical group, and his primary care phys. and it seems like no one wants to help us. They think that because we are young that we will just do as they say that we did not see the mistakes that were made in my husbands dignoses? I took my husband to the ER back in May '06 when I seem that he was having small amounts of blood in his stool. We were asked if we had insurance and at that time we did not. She said she did not want to perform any testing that he may not need. And decided to do a digital exam(fingers). The ER doctor diagnosed him with having Diverticulis. His symptoms came and went over the months. I took him to his primary care phys. and he told us that my husband was too young to be going through these types of symptoms but will take a look. He scheduled my husband for a Barium test. That test took place in Oct. '06. They never called us with the results!! So I called them. Three different times until the girl who answered the phone said they could not see anything wrong and that he did not "clean out properly" but he is FINE>>>>>. She told me that if his symptoms continued to bring him back. So I did just that I made a appointment him in Jan. '07. My husband goes in and the doctor tells him while reading my husbads file"it looks like you did not clean out good enough for the films to show" but your young you should be fine. My husband for the second time explains his symptoms and this time he schedules a Colonoscopy!!!!!! This is when they found the tumor!!!! 4 mo. later. And now my husbands stage is compared to a stage III or even maybe stage IV. I can't help but to think something could have been done. I am not a doctor so we are at the mercy of people telling us that he is fine when he really wasn't. I as well as my husband have repeated this story many time and everyones reaction is they can't believe he did a Barium!!!! God if I would have known better. My husband would not be suffering. I know it would not have prevented the Cancer, but it would have prevented all of blood loss and the emotional stress that my husband felt as if he was bleeding to death. My husband questions every time he has to go to the bathroom thinking that is blood that's going to rush out of him???? All the doctors that we have spoken to surgeon, oncologist, radiation and the general doctor have told us different outcomes if the bleeding could not be controled. I can't but let it all out and hoping that someone read this and give my husband and I something to look forward to. Thank you and God Bless.Mrs. Soto

RE: MY HUSBAND

Dear EvaI am SO Sorry for all that you and your husband are enduring.. it pained me so to read your story. I can only begin to imagine your pain and frustration. You are right that they will treat you as naive for your age. Do not let anybody do that to you. That is what caused your husbands misdiagnosis. Because you were so young and didn't fit the norm. They were all extremely neglegent in there treatment of you. I am 41 and currently undergoing tests. It has taken me 5 children and this many years to realize that my health is in MY hands. I do still take more than I should probably. But the end result I will not TRUST if I am not comfortable with it. I pray for the strnegth for you and your husband to get through this and to be able to stand up to anyone who tries to lesson your suffering or make it something other than what it was.. THEY are responsible not you. You did everything right.. Even being so young.. you took his symptoms seriously and responded to them and persued it! They were extremely neglengent!Hang in there and be strong.. I will remember you and your husband in my prayers.May God Bless you bothCarol
