12 year old whippet mix "Betty" has Canine TCC

My 12 year old dog Betty is in great shape except for the TCC she was diagnosed with in mid-Febuary. I am debating Chemo, Radiation, holistic care, etc. She is on Piroxicam and a low-carb diet but now her Kidney enzimes are getting bad, they were fine before the change in diet & the piroxicam.

Does anyone have any advice for me? I am so confused and i really want to make the right decision for Betty!

Sorry to hear the news..OUr Daisy has TCC too. We decided NO with Chemo..and let her be comfortable. In fact we had her on Perioxicam for 2 dyas and all she did was PANT..so now just OMEGA 3 iol (you can get this in a flaxoil Algae based) No kibbles, just boiled turkey or chicken with wet dog food ..broccoli or zuccinni chopped. I would recommend a Hlisticvet to help you through this. Good luck- Sandi

Thank you!

Betty seems pretty happy, but her appetite is less, and there is blood in her urine.

I just saw a herbal/accupuncture oriented vet that put her on maoke (spelling?) mushroom powder capsuls and a chinese herb.

She is so on antibiotics, acidoph/bif. capsule to offset that 2x a day, thyroid meds in am, pepsid pm, and piroxicam every other pm.

Oh, and a oatmeal, veggie, and meat diet. Apparently rabbit is one of the better meats with kidneys, and oats one of the better carbs with cancer. sigh, kind of a confusing food tightrope. Has anyone out there used chemo for their pup by the way?

Has anyone out there used chemo for their pup by the way? Suzanne I just came across this article. My 9 year old schnauzer was diagnosed with TCC in December of 05. I am blessed that he is still with me. I had the tumor surgically removed immediately and he did chemo on and off for a duration of a year. He did wonderful. It slowed down the regrowth of the tumor. It did however come back. He has been on piroxicam for approximately 5 months now. I am starting to see blood in his urine though. I'm in the process if trying to figure out another route. He also developed mestasis on the abdominal wall after his surgery. I've had those removed several times but they are growing back fast and he is unable to have anymore surgeries. He only has one functioning kidney. He is on the k/d prescription diet and fatty acid pills daily. I'm looking for any suggestions also. I feel my oncologist has given up on him but I am not until he tells me he cant fight the cancer any longer. I am going to check into the hollistic medicine that everyone continues to talk about.Laurie
