Stage II and now 2 nodules in lung? help!

Hello everyone. First time posting. My dad was diagnosed with stage II melanoma about 2 years ago. He had a surgical resection as well as lymph nodes removed. The nodes were clean and the surgeon was very happy. He did interferon for a year. He has had routine imaging and blood work every 3 months. Imaging had been fine and blood work normal.Well, now he has 2 lung nodules on chest CT. He is scheduled to have a PET next week.I guess my post is more of a scared rant rather than a specific question. I just can't understand how everything was looking good with negative nodes 2 years ago and clean blood work since. now he has 2 nodules. I guess the PET is going to be the critical study.Does anyone have experience with a situation very similar to this? Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated!

Hi! I understand your fear. PET scans are extremely sensitive. Infection or scarring from something previous can show up on scan in the lungs. I've seen it happen as I work for a dermatoligist. So this may or may not be related to his melanoma. Know that your dad has done everything he is supposed to do to beat this so I would say it is now in God's hands. I hope the best result for him. Pray as I will.

thank you. he had a CT of the chest in 2005 and, from what i understand, these nodules were not there 2 years ago. so, i really hope that it's not related to the melanoma...but i fear it is. you are correct, he has done everything he was supposed to do. this is what bothers me a lot. i just hope that we get good news with the PET scan. at the very least, even if it is related to the melanoma, then i hope it would only be these 2 little nodules because you can go after a single organ metastasis aggressively with a better prognosis from what i have been told by an oncologist that i spoke with.i am so scared for him. oh, and my wife and i just had our first baby 6 weeks ago...his first grandchild. this is eating at me because i so want him to take this time to enjoy her and not worry about statistics and prognosis.
