Pain after neck dissection

Has anyone experienced pain and stiffness in shoulders after bilateral neck dissection? My husband's surgery was nine weeks ago. He has had severe neck tightness (like a noose or tight collar) and shoulder pain which is worse on the left side. He does physical therapy for range of motion in his shoulders. About a week ago the pain in the left shoulder/arm became significantly worse. The family doctor gave him a shot of cortisone & Novocaine, but that didn't help at all. Any thoughts? Thanks,Angel

RE: Pain after neck dissection

2things, my husband had releif from barnes myofacial massage therapy that helped move the fluid caused by removal of lymph nodes, the fluid then backed up and caused a lot of pain.....however JD is now 2 years post surgery and the numbness is still present, many movements cause increased pain.....unfortunately, the drs best best is pain pills, which he does take daily. Once those nerves are cut..... pain can be ongoing. JD did not take pain pills for the pain until the last dr visit....just 1 month ago....after trying to wait for the pain to lessen he finally told dr they needed to do something, and the solution is for him (hydrocodone) daily. The secret normal is never the same again. So pain may now be normal....and the answer is what to do to increase the quality of life.

how is your husband doing now? i just had a second neck dissection two weeks ago, and about 1 week ago i started having severe shoulder pain and neck pain. i started physical therapy, am taking pain meds an muscle relaxer but it still hurts a lot. i think it is from the way i was positioned in surgery, so hopefully it is temporary and not a permanent nerve problem.
