Bone scan question - freaking out!

Okay, now I am freaking out! I went to see a new podiatrist about an injury that I suffered six years ago LONG before I was diagnosed with rectal cancer. This doc ordered a bone scan of my left foot because he suspects a Liz Frank injury. I have also had some problems with my thigh after I took a nasty fall from my bike (same leg) so my GP amended the orders to include everything in the left leg/foot. Well, today, I called just to make sure that everything was ordered correctly and the guy in nuclear medicine says that because I had a history of cancer, I have to have a complete bone scan. Is there something that I am missing? No one ordered it. My oncs office didn't even know about it and says that the bone scan people will normally do this with ANYONE who has had a history of cancer. Has anyone ever heard of this? Why when I thought I was going in for a leg/foot injury do I have to be reminded of my rectal cancer? Here I was feeling great all day and went back to the chemo room to take treats and cheer people up and now this! Does this seem normal to anyone? I REALLY don't want to have to go through the entire weekend freaking out about this!

Please don't freak out!! Three years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and chose a bilateral masectomy. Everything has been fine for 3 years. However, last Fall I asked my onco to order a full body bone scan for MY peace of mind. And the scan is well worth the extra time. It was such a relief to hear that there was no recurrence in my bones. Every once in awhile, I will pull all of my test results and just say a thank you prayer. This test will help give you some mental closure on the cancer. Even though there is no "cure" because cancers can always pop up years down the road, but at this point in time I have peace of mind. And so will you!! Good luck!! I will say a prayer for you. Maddy

The only one that could order the test for suspicious reasons would be your doctor so it must just be protocol in the nuclear medicine department. They probably feel like since your there and have a history they may as well do the whole thing because you may have it ordered at a later date. I hope it went well!Terry
