RE: My mom has liver cancer in final stage

I am truly sorry about your mother's situation.
My dear brother found peace yesterday after a valiant and courageous yearlong battle with primary liver cancer. He took Nexavar for about two months but the side effects were difficult and it did not halt progression of the disease. Even if it extended his life a little--and there is no way to know if it did--I do not believe he would accept any chemotherapy if he had it to do over again. The chemoembolization and evaluation for liver transplant he had in the first months following diagnosis were procedures he could live with. But he definitely would not have taken adriamycin and probably not Nexavar unless it would have been started earlier in his treatment. Nexavar may extend life but the quality of life while on the drug was not good for him.
My brother's liver cancer was secondary to Hepatitis B. One of the greatest lessons I have learned is the importance of supporting education programs encouraging testing and vaccination for the virus.
Peace be with you and with all those affected by this terrible disease.

The cost of Nexavar is aproximately 4,000 to 5000 USD per month. My brother took Nexavar for 1 month with no improvement. He had advanced primary liver cancer, diagnosed in July. The tumor was 11cm on the right lobe, and few smaller ones in the left lobe. The Nexavar side effects that he had was rash on the forehead and extreme tireness. After 1 month, he had to stop Nexavar because bilirubin rose so rapidly (bilirubin is a sign of liver failure). I'm really sorry to hear about your mom. I lost my brother just 3 weeks ago, exactly 2 months after he was diagnosed. The survivor rate for primary liver is extremely low. You may want to consider alternative treatment. Take Care,

There is a Chinese herbal tea called Sunrecome that, according to my brother's oncologist, helped one of his patients with liver cancer. It is very expensive and limited information about how it works can be found by googling Sunrecome and looking at websites, some of which are in Chinese. It appears to be more extensively used in Asia and there has been some clinical research on it in China so you might be able to get better information than we were able to find in the US.

I'm vietnamese as well. The liver cancer that my brother in law had was so advance that the doctors give us no option. We tried alternative treatment (Chinese Herbal) as well since Nexavar didn't work. But at the end, nothing really work as the disease is so advance. I hope the alternative treatment will work on your mom. It doens't hurt to take a chance.

I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. I lost my Mom to Lung cancer many years ago.Right now I am care-giver and proxy for my uncle who has final stage liver cancer. He had held up very well for many, many months. Up until last week, he was able to go up and down stairs, heat up his food and even go out and about with me in the car. But, within only a few days he cannot do any of that anymore. Working with Hospice I was able to secure all the equipment (bed, commode, side table, oxygen, etc) and the 24 hour care he now needs. My Uncle's wish was to stay at home as long as he could. With everything we now have in place in his home, his wish will be granted. I've been told by our Nurse that he will slip away at a fairly rapid rate now. So, my point is that the final days come very quickly once you see the sleepiness, increased fluid retention and confusion. Blessings to you and your family.

They gave him 6 months 28 years ago. He is a bull today. My father with colon cancer and was given 6 months 3 years ago. His doctor asked "What is your secret"!!! A close neighbor that was told if he did not get a liver transplant he would die. Now they say he was misdiagnosed. It would take volumes to say exactly what I believe helped but I'll recommend the book "beating cancer with nutrition" and carrot juice, carrot juice, carrot juice!
