I was diagnosed with VIN III

I was wondering if anyone knows what I am in for. My DR. recommends that I have Laser Vulvectomy for VIN. I've had a biopsy in March of 2007. Came back VIN II. Then in July I had an excision because she did not get all with the biopsy. I still had the condition in the surronding tissue and now it has gone from a VIN II to a VIN III. She has scheduled Laser Vulvectomy. I have also used the creme with no results. It is still in the PRE-CANCER stage. Am I doing the right thing? She tells me I will be uncomfortable for awhile and needs sometime off of work, I sit a a desk all day. She also tells me probably the reason I got this was my immune system was down since I have lost 70lbs. I do feel good, but just scared.

RE: I was diagnosed with VIN III

Hi!I cannot answer how the vulvectomy will be as I only had lasering done to remove an area that was VIN 3 back in June. My dotcors told me that more than one surgery may be needed to get all of the pre cancer cells and from doing research I have found that some will need more than one lasering before they get it all. I also had an excision done at the same time that came back as VIN 1 and they told me they had clear margins for the excised area. I find out on OCT 2 whether I need another laser surgery done. A vulvectomy will be ALOT different than just lasering a small area as they are removing the vulva. One of my doctors did tell me that some women who have large areas affected with VIN do have to have vulvectomy done. Ultimately it is your decision on whether you are doing the right thing. All I can advise is to make an informed decision and if you aren't sure get second, third or fourth opinions. Do what is best for you. It is very stressful but if you have any doubts seek other opinions. I am here if you need to talk. I have found it helps greatly to be able to talk to other women who have this as we all know and understand what we all are going through. Keep your chin up and think positive! Keep us posted.:)

I would recommend getting a second and even third opinion. Never hurts. You need to feel comfortable with the decision you are making. I did and now I am grateful. Also do you really need a partial vulvectomy??? Has your doctor talked about wide local excision? Is the area labia minora or majora? I read in Dr Elizabeth Stewart's book (the V book) that the areas with hair laser surgery does not work well as HPV hides at the bottom of hair follicles. I am lucky that I am seeing Dr Stewart herself and few other specialist but whereever you are I am sure there are Doctors who specialize on this. Please feel good about any decision before doing anything too drastic. All the best,Esra
