signet cell stomach cancer treatments

My nephew was diagnosed with stage IV stomach cancer and today was the surgery. Unfortunately no surgery was actually performed, other than a stomach tube placed for future, as the cancer has spread to other organs. It is Signet Cell, from what I read today, rare and aggressive. He is 37 years old, and this is quite a shock to all.
Does anyone know what is realistic at this point? Is chemo going to give him a few weeks/months but only slowing it down?
We don't know where to turn, and hope others can give us an idea. Thanks, Susan

sorry to hear this about your nephew. stomach cancer is very difficult. most cases aren't caught til late stages. not alot of research going on for this type of cancer.my father (74yrs old) was just diagnosed in july. has surgery in august. the removed 60% of his stomach. they saw it had spread to the liver and colon and lymph system. the tumor they removed was at the very bottom of the stomach, going into the colon. if it were almost anywhere else, or would have spread to the outside of stomach they wouldn't have been able to remove what they did. his liver has about 10-15 tumors on each of the 2 lobes. they have given him roughly 10 months to live. in 10wks time the cancer on his liver spread "dramatically".he just started chemo on august 8th. so far he has only been very tired. he has a 2+ hour drip of oxaliplatin every 3rd monday. and on that day he starts taking cispilatin (sp??) pills everyday for 2 weeks. 4 pills in the morning and 4 at nite. then in 2 months they will do another ct to see if any changes. the treatment is agressive. and we hope for the best. the dr's said they can only add months to his prrognosis if chemo goes well.statistics show that a little over 21,000 ppl will be diagnosed in 2007 w/ stomach cancer. of those a little over 11,000 will die from it the same year. wicked....wicked..wicked..i am sick over this every day. it has gotten better for me. i am the youngest of 6. my folks just moved to WI 3yrs ago to help me & my hubby w/ aour 1 and only child (daughter) as she was diagnosed w/ low functioning auutism. my daughter & my dad have a very special bond. my family is at odds over treatment. my mother is a wreck. i hope for the best.some good sites to look at other than this one:cancertutor.comcuretoday.comchemocare.comcancer treatment centers of americabest wishes. i will keep you and your family in my prayers. every bit helps!
Sorry to hear about your newphew. My sister was also diagnoised at age 50 also with signet ring cell.We are happy to say so far it is in just her stomach has not spread outside the wall. She is going for her second chemo treatment this week. She will have three chemos, then coming to sloan in New York for most of her stomach to be removed. As far as what they are telling her is if it did not spread they will go ahead with the surgury. At first her diagnoise was not good at all either.Thet said without chemo 3 to 6 months. But after having laporoscy and they so it not spreading as of that time. Now we are just keeping are fingers crossed and praying every day.Maybe your nephew should go to sloan they seem to know the most about this cancer.GOOD LUCK ARE PRAYS ARE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

under 40? Check with a geneticist ifyourfamily has HDGC - hereditary diffused gastric cancer syndrome like mine has. Signet cells (pre-cancer stage) were found in my stomach at 27 and I am going to have total gastrectomy soon. There is no other way as far as I know. If your family does have HDGC subscribe to the HDGC yahoo group.
