Dry mouth

My mother has been bothered by dry mouth and perhaps a little thrush for quite a while now. At this point, any small comfort would be a big thing. The doctors have prescribed different medications, but so far no success. Any suggestions?

RE: Dry mouth

I also had dry mouth and drank glass after glasses of water it even woke me up, I found it was worse with my first round of chemo 5FU, Epirubicin and Cyclophosamide. I also ended up with mouth sores so I brushed my teeth gently with warm water and baking soda and my onco gave me nystatin to swish and swallow it really helped. But the dry mouth is just an indicator that water is constantly drank. It's important to the bladder as the chemicals can cause a bladder infection if you don't keep it full. When they switched me to Docetaxel that went away but then had and still have lots of bone and joint pain and brown fingernailsGood luck

My mom has been experience severe dry mouth as well. We received advice about making protein milkshakes with vanilla ice cream. Also she is just getting over thrush and is using two prescription mouth washes. She has been using Biotene after each meal (mouthwash and toothpaste) and that seems to help. I also read to eat plain or vanilla yogurt and to avoid foods with a lot of sugar. Not sure if your mom is finding things to drink difficult as everything my mom tries doesn't taste good. We keep changing her drinks, watering them down and hoping that something will taste good. Jello is also another option. Good luck with everything and I hope your mom's spirits are up.

Istart my 9th cycle of Folfox Monday. Fortunately to date i have been free of most of the side affects but I am still very tired on day 4 . I also have dry mouth with cracking in the corner of my lips. I rinse with salty water which seems to be keeping the problem from worsening.
