what to take if catch cold while on sutent?

Dear all, My dad is starting week 3 of sutent (37.5 mg) and starting to get the sniffles. What medicine is appropriate for someone taking sutent who may have a cold? Would OTC medicines like Nyquil, tylenol cold work? Any advise would be helpful. Thanks.

My husband has been on sutent a year and when he has colds he goes to his GP. He does not take any OTCs without checking with GP or oncologist.

We have found that with all this chemo stuff just call the ono. office Usually you will get the nurse to take the information and return a call for the doctor with instructions that day. I would not take anything without asking but ASK. There is so much interaction with medications that the WEB does not list all side affects. You do not want to affect his treatment for the cancer. Good luck with sutent my husband just could not deal with the side affects.

My mom caught a very bad cold/viral illness just into her second week of treatment/Sutent. Her fevers were 103 and higher. She ended up in the hospital because she was very dehydrated. Make sure your dad drinks plenty of fluids. Always check with the doctor before you give him anything. My mom's doctor said she could take claritin, musinex and saline spray for her nose. She still uses the saline spray. Hers lasted for over a month and now we are being more careful than ever not to catch germs. To prevent have hand sanitizer all over the house/pockets when out. We sanitize any carriage in the store, sanitize our hands after touching anything (especially a menu in a restaurant) and stay away from anyone with a cold/sore throat. All of the best to your dad and your family. - Melissa
