Mom in hospital again...

My mom had to be put in the hospital over the weekend because her tumor (in the esophagus) was bleeding out a bit into her stomach. Does anyone know any stage IV treatments for this? They said they might need to radiate the tumor but that would be very taxing. Has anyone else experienced this? ChrisZ

Hi Chris, My Dad had this problem, the doctors here thought that he might of had a raw spot in the esophagus from when they put the stent in, They gave in some anti nauseous drug and vitamin k to clot the blood and they he had to have two blood transfusions. This was right before Christmas. It had happened after he had a chemo treatment. Since then he's been doing quite well. Not sure if this will help or not.

Hi Chris: My son, Robbie, did not have any bleeding into his stomach from the tumour in his esophagus. He did, however, have brachytherapy radiation which actually killed the primary cancer. He was stage IV when diagnosed. The brachytherapy went very well. He had 3 treatments - one on Thursday of one week and 2 the following week - Tuesday and Thursday. We were very surprised that he could eat very well on Friday of the second week of brachy. He did have a terrible burning feeling in his esophagus and chest about one week after the last treatment which lasted for about 10 days. He could not eat much at all during that time. I don't know how old your mother is, but I do know that the brachy was not too difficult for my son. Of course, at the time Robbie was only 34, but still with stage IV and mets to the liver and taking chemo at the same time we felt it was very worthwhile. Robbie was given only 3-4 months WITH treatment and he lived 18 months from diagnosis to his passing in October 2007. Stage IV adenocarcinoma is very difficult to treat. My son was a hero to me and his family. He lived one day at a time and I am afraid that is all that is getting me by these days is his voice in my ear saying one day at a time. Ask your Mother's oncologist about brachytherapy - it really worked for Robbie.God Bless and my prayers are with you and your familyLynn
