Gallbladder and liver

Hi allThank God I found a site like this as I feel so frustrated not having someone who understands where I am. My husband was disgnosed with gallbladder and liver cancer, in July 07, in Aug 07 he had 2 thirds of his liver and gallbladder removed. He was very very ill and had alot of setbacks as a result of major surgery, however, he had now made a remarkable recovery. He still gets tired some days and gets tired when we walk to far but all in all I cannot believe he is still here, as I'm sure some of you will understand, we haven't asked as many questions as we should have and all we really know is that no-one has ever survived this type of cancer for more that 5 years and they told us my husband would probably have 2 years. Is there anyone out there who knows of anyone with this type of cancer, if so I would love to hear from you and compare notes. We are going for a check up CT scan this friday and are both worried sick.Look forward to hearing from someone.Siobhan (Ireland)

I don't have any information for you, because my problems were so different. But this board is a good place for information and hopefully someone can help. As far as a time limit, I always think about Lance Armstrong, he had testicular cancer with mets to the liver and brain and he is still a live and cancer free 10 years later. Keep your hopes and spirits up. Only God knows when it is time for us to leave this earth.Gerri - North Carolina USA

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's battle (and yours). In March 07, I was also diagnosed with primary liver cancer at age 50. It is rare that some without hepatitis or cirrhosis would get this. However, I did and I had surgery to remove the tumor in April 07. They always remove the gallbladder. I'm lucky in that, my cancer was no where else and the margins and lymph nodes were negative. The Dr. gave me a =/> 50% chance of surviving 5 years. That is ALL most Drs. will give anyone. Five(5) years is the benchmark. Yes, someone can survive longer. I have a family friend diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which is worse and they gave her 1 year. It's been 8 years, and still cancer free. I asked my Dr. if he had anyone that was beyond 5 years, he said "yes" My scans have been good until this past Monday 1/28/08, where there is a "spot" on the liver in the exact spot of the resection. It is so tiny, they don't know what it is, so I get another scan in 3 months. Everything thing else looked good, blood work too. They explained that many, many times there are "blurps" from the scan and are usually not seen on repeat. However, since I have a cancer diagnosed, they have to be cautious. The Dr. did pull any punches. VERY WORRIED to say the least so I know where you and your husband are emotionally. It will happen each time you have a scan. I will pray for your husband and you, that you will get through this. It's hard, I know! Read all you can about liver cancer and please eat for the liver - detoxify, eat beets, drink beet juice, carrots and do not eat sugars. We can only do what we can and the rest is truly up to God, and when your life is in balance, it's hard to put your full trust in Him. It's very scary and I don't know about you, but I cry alot, especially since this past Monday.Again, I'm sorry and I'd love to hear from you again.Tracie, Durham, NC (USA)

I would suggest two things: one look for a promising clinical trail. Some drugs in trial may be available under the "compassionate use" program. If your husband has no problem taking supplements, I suggest getting thebook Natural Strategies for Cancer Patients by Russell Blaylock, MD($10) at Amazon Further, I have a friend on the Gerson Therapy and very pleased.

Hi TracieThank you for such a prompt reply, its nice to talk to someone who understands and as I've only just found this site, I'm feeling some relief and hope that I can get some good advice and remediesKen had 2 liver lobes removed along with his gallbladder, and when he had a ct scan in October while he was still very ill from his surgery it showed no sign of the decease returning. However, as you have just experienced every scan is worrying. As doc 1 told us to go home and forget it!! and doc 2 second opinion doc operated we still feel quite nervous about asking to much, although now I feel stronger and ready for more questions and answers. Its good to hear that a doc told you that he has known someone to survive more than 5 yrs. Although after all we have been through if Ken gets 5 yrs at this moment in time we would be delighted.Like you Ken's cancer was gallbladder and liver and nowhere else at the time of op. You had your op 11 months ago, do you still get tired? do you do much exercise? are you working again? do you have any specific "what not to eat" and "what you should eat"?I do hope all goes well and even though they say there is a spot if you are feeling well then you always must believe that all is well.I look forward to hearing from you and take care.Siobhan(Ireland)

Hi Siobhann my dear - I am in Australia and my partner was diagnosed 4 years ago this July - the Doctors have a standard response so take it as you have as long as you are prepared to fight for - we eat foods that dont load the liver up so no dairy and no processed foods and loads of fish - no fries - the liver works as a filter and if it is loaded up with fat it makes you tired so clean food like beetroot carrot ginger etc - we eat porridge with soy cinnamon and honey each morning - drink dandelion tea - fish, salads, wholemeal breads, and I make fresh cakes with no butter, drink a daily coopers beer 0.5% and chocolate by Lindt 85%, loads of nuts, berries, greens, soy milk and smoothies, no coffee, vitamins - milkthistle and so forth - my partner works travels and takes chemo orally - he has had Avastin, Gemzitubine, Tarceva, 5FU, Sirtex, and soon to have Sorifanib - look to cancerbackup (uk) website and clinicaltrials.org - meditate and clear the body of stress.......listen to folk music and be happy - we are living - all the while praying, researching, working, enjoying family, travelling and if 4 years runs to 5 and so forth then God is on our side as I am sure God is on yours......Eileen xxx
