Good on him!! Keep it up!! My oncology dietitian agrees with regaining and maintaining weight. She also says that nothing has been proven regarding the concept that 'sugar feeds only cancer cells'. In fact, she said that sugar feeds ALL cells and provides our energy -- and she does not advocate changing ones diet just because one has cancer!! Unfortunately I got a bit of bad news on my oncology visit today -- my regular doctor is on holidays and so I had to see a substitute, and he discovered that I now have osteonecrosis of my jaw! I assumed that this meant jaw cancer, but he said no, it means bone death of the jaw. Unfortunately he says that there is no 'treatment' apart from giving up Aridia (I did this over 12 months ago after being on it for 2 years), stop smoking (I never have smoked), brush your teeth after every meal ( I only brush once or twice a day) and take antibiotics if there is pain! Apart from this, my blood work looked really good -- my paraprotein is down to 8.5 -- it was 90 at its worst -- and I'm still neutropenic, but hey, thats been the case for months so I just avoid all situations where I might come in contact with people who are ill. Sorry about all of this rambling, but you did ask and I needed to tell someone!! That's the beauty of this board!! Thanks for caring -- I'll take a look at this Issels site now and let you know my reactions!! Take good care and keep him eating!! Cath

Not to worry -- I do have lots of support -- most important is my wonderful Bob! Yes, I have a bit of pain, but the doc gave me a prescription for 500mg Keflex to keep on hand in case it flares up and becomes more painful. Basically I can't have any dental work -- except filling replacements if necessary, but no extractions or root canal type work -- anything that might deal with the jaw bone. Don't cry for me -- save your tears for people with real problems -- I'm not being heroic, just practical! Its not all that bad, yet...and hopefully now that I know what is happening we can take steps to ensure that it doesn't develop into anything more serious. This is just a real case of mentioning everything to your oncologist -- it may not be connected to your cancer, but...somethimes it is!! Best to know so that you can plan. I was initially upset, but as the afternoon has progressed I'm now at ease with what has happened and am looking at it through positive eyes -- its only one spot, it could have been the whole jaw --pain is annoying, but it could be excruciating -- things could be much worse! I'm blessed with a wonderful family and friends -- which extends to many of the members of this board!! Sorry I lost my cool for a moment when I first came home -- it took a few hours to come to grips with it, but honestly I'm ok now!! Thanks for your support!! Cath
