Mom's Cancer

Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm new to this site. My mother has kidney cancer and is starting chemo today. She is taking the torisel. I was hoping that someone could let me know if there has been any success with this medicine. My mom had part of her kidney removed 2 years ago, and now the cancer has returned and they can't do surgery again. Not sure why. It has only returned in her kidney not spread anywhere else. She does have other health problems. She is diabetic and has heart problems. Just wondering if anyone else out there has these problems and how the chemo affected it. Thanks

One of the main side effects of Torisel is elavated glucose levels. I ended up in the hospital with pnemonia and extremely elevated sugar. I am not a doctor, and would not second guess yours, but make sure your mom's doctor is aware of these side effects and monitiors her closely. Torisel has also been linked to heart problems. Any reason the doctor didn't choose Nexavar or Sutent for your mom? Ask the doctor. I had nine treatments with Torisel and a ct scan half way through. My cancer was stable and one tumor in my lung was shrinking, so the drug was probably working. Unfortunately, it was something I could not tolerate. My oncologist thought about restarting the Torisel, but decided against it. I am now on Sutent, and will have my 1st Ct scan next week, after 4 weeks on the drug. Good luck to your mom.Richard

RE: Mom's Cancer

Torisel has only been available since mid 2007, so there is not much information on how effective the drug is, but it looks very promising. Successful treatment is related to the type renal cancer a person has. For example, Sutent doesn't seems to be effective on papillary RCC, but Torisel is. Ask the oncologist what type of RCC your mom has. If you haven't done so, get a second pathology opinion to confirm the type. Insurance will cover this.T
