cytotec dosage amount

My 11 year old Standard Poodle, Mandy, was put on Piroxicam and Pepcid last week. It seemed like a miracle how fast she improved. She had been barely able to walk and would not eat for nearly 3 weeks while the vet tried to figure out what was wrong with her; we came really close to having her put to sleep. She was vomiting and had diaherra and still has a weird cough, but it's not as bad as it was.THey had already diagnosed low liver functions and put her on meds for that and special dog food which she would not eat either. She did not improve. She got to where she would not even eat steak or the brown rice and chicken the vet recommended. After chest Xrays, the vet thinks that the toe cancer she started getting at age 7 (3 toes amputed all together) has spread to her stomach. The vet said let's try Piroxicam and see if she does better. She started eating again (and stopped throwing up) within 8 hours of her first pill. She has been on it for 7 days now and is much stronger, acting like her old self, and actually eating the L/D dry dogfood as long as I add broiled calf liver or chicken to it.. Last night she started throwing up again. I found your message board and called the vet with the name of the new med (Cytotec) to try but the vet is unsure of the dosage. I even had to hunt around local pharmacies to find it here because the vet was unable to find it. Can anyone tell me how much Cytotec I should start her out on. She has always had a delicate stomach. Thanks,MandyLover

Hi Mandy,The dose would be 100 mcg three times a day. A generic is available and you can get the 200 mcg tablets and split them in half (to further reduce the cost)Barbara
