On May 7 I had a lumpectomy and was diagnosed with metaplastic carcinoma. On June 12, I four a lump in my other breast, invasive ductal carcinoma. July 15, the night before my bilateral mastectomy, another lump in my left breast. I too am hungry for contact with survivors and information on metaplastic carcinoma. Meet with oncologist on August 5 to plan future treatment.

RE: Metaplastic Carcinoma

Hi there. I also have metaplastic carcinoma. I was diagnosed in March and opted to have chemotherapy first since my lump was 5cm and the doctors recommended this. I have finished chemo (6 sessions of TAC) and am now scheduled to have surgery in August. Even though the chemo worked well in reducing the size of my lump, I am having a bilateral mastectomy - a personal choice that my husband and I agreed would be best. I will have radiation after that, which puts off reconstruction for a year. How did your surgery go on July 15th? I hope you are well on your road to recovery. Let me know how the meeting with your oncologist goes. I will say, that although TAC (Taxotere, Adriamycin, and Cyclophosphamide) is an agressive treatment, I handled it well and know that it was effective in reducing my lump so I'm assuming that if there were other strays cancer cells in my body, that this type of chemo did a good job attacking them, too! Best wishes,Chris

RE: Metaplastic Carcinoma

It has been awhile but thanks for asking. I did very well recovering from bilateral mastectomy. Invasive ductal in right breast was Stage 1. Another tumor appeared in left, metaplastic carcinoma. Still no lymphnode involvement. Now I am in chemo. 2nd treatment of AC was Sept 5. I am on 3 week schedule due to low white cell count after first treatment. Then 4 taxol.HOpefully taxol will be every 2 weeks, My oncologist says the effictiveness improves on 2 week regimen. After that radiation for 5 to 6 1/2 weeks.I am doing well with the chemo. Tired the 3 and 4 day after and a little queasy. I am able to continue with my normal life after the first 5-7 days. How is everyone else doing with this. My radiation oncologist said he sees 1 or 2 metaplastic carcinoma a year. He is part of a huge clinic and sees hundreds of patients a year.

Hi,Your experience with chemo sounds quite similar to mine. I, too, had the most difficulty on days 3 and 4 and felt pretty good after a week. I'm glad you are handling it well. I had a bilateral mastectomy on Aug. 22. I didn't have any cancer in the left breast, but I don't regret removing it anyway. I have recovered quickly although after all of the chemo and surgery, I don't have as much energy as I used to. I'll build that all back up after radiation. I begin the first of 33 radiations treatments on Monday. I had my "dry run" today. I hope all continues to go well with your treatments.Chris
