Dysplasia in Cervical Canal after LEEP

Hi. I am 32 years old, actually I was 31 when I had my LEEP done in Oct 2007. I just had my followup pap and it showed more dysplasia. Because all of the dysplasia in in the cervical canal and the MD can't see it, she wants to do another LEEP. Initally, after my first abnormal pap, when I had the Colposcopy, she thought I was just fine because she saw nothing on my cervix. She took the sample of the cervical canal to make sure things were fine. Obviously they weren't. After the LEEP she was sure she had gotten it all. And now this....I am very discouraged and scared. I am going through a divorce right now so my stress level is already up. I need more information about the seriousness of dysplasia in the cervical canal. My doctor seemed pretty concerned when I talked to her today. WHen I went for my follow up pap she was sure it would come back fine and I felt like she was very sorry to eat her words today. When I asked her how concerned she was, she stated that she wanted to get this taken care of within the month. I am trying to stay positive and not worrry about the impact that this might have on future relationships and on childbearing. But those issues are definately on my mind. I know this is a virus so it does not go away, just flares up...but can you get it again after she scrapes it all away? I hope one day to have sex again...should I avoid that? ANy input is appreciated!!

RE: Dysplasia in Cervical Canal after LEEP

Did your doctor show you each lab report as she went along and give a full explanation? Meaning, the initial PAP smear results, the first biopsy, and the lab report from the LEEP? Something doesn't sit right about what you have posted, so far. I think you need to get another doctor and have another biopsy done before you go through another procedure. If it is in the endocervical canal, you'll more than likely need a cone biopsy, and I don't want to frighten you, but make sure the endocervical glands are not involved. This is why you need a new doctor who shows you those lab reports and gives you a thorough explanation about the kind of dysplasia you have and how extensive it is.If you do need a cone biopsy, it is often done via LEEP, but cold knife leaves a cleaner wound. It's not cost effective, so insurance companies try to push LEEP. But consider all of your options before you do anything. You do have them, and you want your decision to be as informed as possible.

RE: Dysplasia in Cervical Canal after LEEP

thanks for your reply and your thoughts. I have just sent all of my info (that I have not specific test results) to a friend who is an OBGYN for an unofficial second opinion. I am also going to call my MD office tomorrow (it is after 5 now) and get specific results sent to me. I guess I have not asked for enough questions. THis is such a scary thing and I have been so overwhelmed that I have been a bit passive and just going with what the MD says....thanks again for your input.

I'm glad your friend is looking over all of this with you. I still think you need a different doctor. There are too many question marks about the initial biopsy, why you were not shown the lab results, etc. You need a doctor who is both direct and caring. You also need to know all of your options, their risks and benefits, and if you are wanting to start a family, discuss the best procedure for both the kind of dysplasia you have and the kind that will have the least impact on a pregnancy. A good, honest doctor will go over all of this with you. Definitely fire the one you have.My initial PAP test was done by my general practitioner, and she gave me a copy of the results, which I appreciated. (It was mild dysplasia.) The first OB/GYN I saw did not show me the biopsy results from the colposcopy. She said I had mild dysplasia with one focal point at the edge of the transformation zone that was CIN II but wouldn't give me a copy of the lab report when I asked for it. She also pushed LEEP on me and said I needed to get it done within the next two weeks. I ended up firing her because I learned she was planning to do a cone biopsy I didn't need. (I opted for outpatient and general anesthesia.) I still have the second OB/GYN in a different clinic, who is as direct and caring as my general practitioner. I'm going to keep that one.
