lung cancer

My mother in law was diagnosed with non small cell lung cancer, stage 3b, in Nov. Since then she has been in & out of the hospital with 2 heart attacks. She has just finished 3 rounds of chemo & is half way through a six week radiation therapy. They have decided to stop the chemo until she is done with the radiation, as it is too hard on her physically. She is 81. I would like to hear from anyone who is dealing with similar situation. It is hard to see her so weak.

RE: lung cancer

Hi I totally understand what you and your family are going through. My mom was diagnosed in January with stage IV lung cancer with mets to the brain and lymph nodes. For her it has really been downhill ever since. Mom had 15 rounds of radiation, radio surgery and ONE chemo treatment. There will be NO more treatments for her. It has been way too hard on her and FOR HER, the benefits are NOT outweighing the advantages of treatment. Mom is 84 and I think that is part of the reason. She is in the hospital right now, trying to get 'stronger'. The chemo totally knocked her socks off. She wasn't eating or drinking and was so, so weak. Monday she will be released to my home and hospice is going to be called in. This is very, very hard for me, but I am coming to grips with the reality of this horrible, horrible cancer she has. I am not telling you this to discourage you. Everyone is different and I have read so many posts here and at other lung cancer sites where people live great lives for years after being diagnosed with lung cancer. I just wanted to tell you my story so you'd know you're not alone in this journey. Keep positive and I hope everything turns out well. Keep the board informed so we know.

RE: lung cancer

I also know what you are going through. We found out the my mom who is 54 has stage 4 lung cancer (she has never smoked in her life). It has been about two months since we were told but in that time she has had major back surgery to correct the damage done to her spine by a tumor, and today she will finsh up the 15 rounds of radiation. Yes it is so hard to see her at home and always tired with no engery that just is not her. But not that she is done with radition she will have a two week break before chemo. All i can say is stay strong you have been dealing with it longer then me so you know that but it seems so hard and i can not imagaine how i will feel if her health fades anymore.
