nails

I have been off chemo now for 1 month.I'm still experiencing side eefects. The one that bothers me most is my nails. They are lifting off the nail bed and where they have lifted the nail is white, looks like fungus but its not. What can i do? I will be returning to work and i use my hands with the public. When i called my doctors office they say its from the chemo (taxotere) and its a normal reaction. This is very embrassing and i was wondering what i can do to make them better.Grannydiva

I had the same or similar problem with my toenails during my first round of chemo. The nail actually got mushy and was lifting off at the cutical. It eventually took care of itself, and I don't remember that it took all that long. Between two rounds of chemo and the side effects of Tarceva, I've experienced more than one embarrassing side effect. But I pretty much laugh it off and tell people it's either this or six feet under. Right now I'm opting for this. Good luck. There's probably not much you can do, unfortunately. I had the same or similar problem with my toenails during my first round of chemo.
Nails grow very slowly, so be prepared to have it go on a while. Husband finished taxotere last May or June and his nails have only been normal a couple of months now. They take a long time to grow out. On a positive note, the nail fungus he had on his feet has not troubled him at all, so the chemo must have killed the fungus too.

The nails are just lifting off the nail bed and as they grow it will get better. I keep them dry and clean. I'm always using hand santizer, no matter where i go or where i've been, i use that santizer. I'll be returning to work soon and work with files, i bought thin cotton gloves to protect them. I'm embrassed how my hands look, i have no hair or eyebrows but that doesn't bother me like the nails do. Weird, but people assume its fungus and back away, they don't back away from my hair loss.I'm just glad my nails where the worst of my treatment.I finished treatemnt and did very well and i'm thankful things went so well for me, and i shouldn't allow something so small bother me so much.Thank you for your comments.
