Moms Cancer

Hi, I have posted one other time on this board about my mom. She was diagnosed last March with RCC. Original kidney cancer was 8 years ago and they removed the right kidney. They said cancer was encapsulated int the kidney and did no further treatment. Now it has metastisized to lung and bones. She tried Sutent and had a bad reaction to it so they had to stop. She's been on Torisel for a few months now. But with the last scan the cancer has severly spread so they are taking her off of it. They are doing another round of radiation to help with pain, but other than that, there is nothing further they can do. Dr. basically told me (after I asked him point blank) we are looking a few months left with her. This is only his opinion by dealing with other patients and seeing her. He said this is not set in stone but it is spreading so rapidly that it doesn't look good. She is in a lot of pain all of the time.We lost my dad August 06 and found out she had the cancer in March 07. I do see a pretty drastic change in her, especaily the last few months. She is determined to stick around for as long as she can. She is a fighter. I am just soo sad and depressed right now about it. I am very close with her and I just dont know how to handle this.I read this board a lot and hear a lot of positive, but I just dont know how positive I can be when cancer is spreading so fast and nothing is helping to slow it down.Thank you for listening.

Rose, So sorry to hear about your mom's condition. It is a scary and frustrating process. I lost my mom to uterine cancer 28 years ago and it is still painful. I just lost my husband (February 22, 2008) to stomach cancer and miss him terribly. The best thing you can do is be supportive of your mother's wishes and be there for her. Talk to her, hold her hand, let her talk, reminisce, or just sit quietly. My husband fought so hard til the very end and I was with him when he passed. I told him constantly how much he meant to me, how great our life was together and we prayed alot. Just pray for strength to get you through this. And remember, only God knows when we will leave this earth, not doctors or nurses or anyone.Take care,Diane

Rose I am so sorry, my mother has gone through the exact same thing the exact removal of kidney and told they got it all, the mets to the lungs, brain, spine,. Sutent caused a brain bleed and she no longer has the ability to drive, speak well or read. Toricel didn't work either and now is taking nexavar and we are hoping this works. I am surprised your doctors did not suggest this, I would ask them about it. I would also find out if there are any clinical trials that she would be able to participate in since this type of cancer seems to be evolving everyday. Best of luck to you and please keep me posted.

hi RoseI havent been to the site for a long time and I saw your message today. It is the same story with my husband 40 years old,. 8 years back in 2000 he had kidney cancer, the whole right kidney was taken out, only did chemo and nothing after that only monitoring with scans etc. this last dec 07 he has had a remission in his lung, spine and adrenal gland. It was a shocking blow to us to say the least!! He is presently on Nexavar and has been taking it since feb. With slight side effects. An MRI done few weeks ago showed that the tumours have decreased in size. Which was really great.! He is also given Zometa to strengthen the bones ( montly IV) . Also he is keeping up his immunity by taking flax oil and oxy drops and a change to his diet to make it more healthy. I hope and pray and send you lots of strengh to fight this out. Be strong, just dont give up. we have to try all options and and be on top of it all. try to get your mom on nexavar if possible. All the bestDaryll
