Metastisis to the madible?

I had a total thyroidectomy in 6/2007 due to papillary thyroid cancer. I am due for my one year scan in May of 2008. Two months ago I noticed a lump under my tongue, but on the mandible directly below my bottom teeth. I have seen a maxiofacial oral surgeon and he has avised me to have a ct and schedule a biopsy. I am trying to remain calm, and think positively, however I am nervous. I know that it is extremely rare...but everyone said not to worry about the lump on my thyroid too.

Did you have any lymph node involvement when you had your thyroidectomy? Also, did you have RAI?

I have a lump in that area too. My surgeon told me that is a normal benign growth. I actually have several family members who have the same lump. My lump is on the mandible below my bottom teeth. I have a large one on my left side and a smaller one on my rght side. I don't think you have anything to worry about, but you should probably see a doctor just to make sure.

However, unilateral growths are a little more worrysome. I think I am a little more concerned because I have had cancer and that there is a possibiliaty of metastisis. Although rare, still possible. Thanks for your encouragement!

No lymph node involvement! Thank goodness! Yes I had RAI. According to my post RAI scan everything looked good in August 2007.

I asked my endo about spreading with no lymph involvement (I had none also) he said it was very unlikely. It would most likely spread to lymphnodes first then very rarely to other places. I understand why you worry though. Every little bump or bruise freaks me out. It is so hard to move on once you have had the word cancer thrown into your life. I know I am having a very hard time with that. It's the first thing I think about in the morning, and the last thing I think about every night. I hope it will stop haunting me after a couple clean scans. Good luck to you-try not to worry (easier said than done) I'm sure it will turn out fine.-Skylog

Thank you for your kind words. This is my second round of Thyrogen injections followed by a scan, and luckily, I have never had to go off my Levoxyl. The Thyrogen does seem to make me feel crummy, though. As you can guess, I'm also sick of the LID! I just want some bad-for-you FOOD!! Pizza! Big Mac! Ice cream! hahaha!I haven't felt right since a mild cold followed by salivary gland swelling in early December, so it will be good to have these scans and see what the heck is going on. Of course, there's always the dread factor.

Salivary glands live there and can get plugged and cause a lump. Try not to worry.
