What can we expect?

My father-in-law is in the final stages of metatastic liver cancer. He was diagnosed in May of 2007 with gallbladder cancer. He did not see an oncologist for awhile because he was told he was too weak. In October of "07, the cancer had spread to his stomach and liver. He chose to not have any treatment because many of his friends had tried chemo and radiation and they were so sick, he didn't want to live the rest of his life sick. He is now severly jaundiced and losing weight rapidly. He tells my husband that he is not in any pain. I pray that's the truth. In the last week, he has gotten so weak he is having trouble walking and getting out of the bed. My husband says that he hardly spoke any last Wednesday night while he was there. The family is heartbroken. I know there's no one can give you a "time table" but God but I need to prepare myself so that I can be there for my husband. If someone has any kind of answer for me, I would love to hear from you.

Thank you for your response. My father-in-law is now unable to walk without assistance and my husband said he is talking a little weird. My husband says that his urine is thicker than normal and looks dark, like a brownish-green color. I don't know what to make of this. I went to see him and he is having horrible heartburn and says that his toes are sore; he jerks them back when someone even moves the cover. He has lost a lot of weight now. I am so very sad - I love this man like he was my own father. He doesn't seem to be in pain. Thank God for that. But he is suffering. Has anyone else had their family members go through these symptoms? I can't stand the thought of him laying and suffering for a long period of time.

How are things now? I have the same questions as you do and would like to compare our situation to yours. My father-in-law was diagnosed in December with stage 4 liver cancer. We are experiencing some changes as well, such as more vomitting and restless nights, and not eating very much at all. Sometimes he can barely keep liquids down. Please let me know how things are with you. Thanks and hang in there.

Thanks and hang in there. My father-in-law is still hanging on but his quality of life is gone. He is no longer talking with any reason and cannot remember anything recent but does occasionally remember things long past. He is only urinating about twice a day now and maybe eats 3 or 4 bites of food a day. He was in no pain until recently but now his stomach is hurting. He is also asking why he hasn't died yet. That is tearing the family apart. As much as they love him, they cannot stand seeing him like this. He has also started talking to people that have already died. He sleeps most of the day now. I don't understand how he is still here. He is very cold all the time; they cannot even turn the air conditioner on now because it makes him shiver and his teeth chatter. I imagine the end is very near but only God knows the appointed time that he's going to take him home. My prayers are with you. I hate the thought of anyone having to go through this.
