throat burns from radiation

My mom's breast cancer is now in her spine and she just finished radiation treatments. She has tumors on her neck and the radiation burned her throat severely. She is still having difficulty swallowing and losing weight which will interfere with chemo. I read one time about aloe vera gel or oil that could be swallowed to help heal the throat. Any suggestions? Nene H

RE: throat burns from radiation

I too had the same problem going through radiation. It is basically thrush in the back of the throat and it is very painful and uncomfortable. The doctor had given me a concoction called majic mouthwash. It was a mix of lidocain, malox and some other stuff. The pharmacy mixed it up and it helped. Due to me not being able to swallow anything, I lost 96 pounds but was put on a feeding tube, this is also how I took my medication (liquid form). The mouthwash helped long enough to be able to swallow some liquids, but food was still too painful. What also helped was buying some alcohol free toothpaste and mouthwash. It is very important to take care of your dental hygiene in these conditions due to the lack of saliva in the mouth which could cause further dental problems. Good luck.
