sick grandfather

My grandfather was originally diagnosed with lung cancer. It then spread to his cervical spine, and eventually his brain. He is now always sleeping, as if in a coma. He is unable to eat, drink, or even respond to any physical stimulus. Two days ago it was decided to take him off the oxygen and IV fluids. His breathing was completely irregular, but they said that his heart was strong. The next day the oxygen was put back on. Now it is being discussed to put him back on the IV. I felt we allowed him to suffer for those hours without the oxygen and IV. Will this on again off again cycle hurt him more than help him? This is especially difficult because I am with him every single day, yet I am not the one who makes the decisions and nobody really wants to give me the info about whats going on.
