need information

My father-in-law recently found out that he had a mass on each of his lungs. This was found by an x-ray that was taken for another reason. Theyreferred him to a pulmonary specialist. He has set him up for a needle biopsy and pet scan. We were not present for this appointment but were able to talk to the Nurse practioner after. She had a concern that it was cancer and that he wasn't taking it seriously enough. At first she called it a large mass one left upper lung and a small one on right lung. But after that she referred to them as tumors. If anyone has any helpful information or experiences of a similar nature so that we can assess what risk he has. He is 89 and as she said in great health, no breathing problems and he goes out dancing 2 to 3 evenings a week, very active. Thank you.
