Recently diagnosed

Hi I am new here and have been doing alot of reading. I was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer roughly a month ago. I saw the surgeon on Monday past and they found another spot on my adrenal gland, so I am waiting for a call for an MRI to determine if it is cancer or not. The surgeon says the outcome of the MRI will determine the stage, if the spot is not cancer it means it has no spread and I am at a stage 1, however if the spot is cancer, then it is a stage 4. The hardest part is the waiting, and wondering, and at times it is pretty scary, but I am strong and I figure what is is and I will keep on keeping on. I've read at lot on this site, and it helps knowing I am not alone in this fight. Hope to be around some, I guess it all depends on the stage. Thank you for having this site. Evelyn

RE: Recently diagnosed

Hi, I too am a newly dx warrior, but had my surgery (Ivor lewis) on March 18th. My CT before surgery mentioned no visible sign of spread, but 15 of the 30 lymph nodes removed were affected, so I am now awaiting starting chemo ... should have been this week, but Oncologist decided that I was not strong enough to start, as I have been having trouble holding my weight (I also had a 4 week stay in hospital due to setbacks). Anyhow, while I am waiting to start, she has ordered another set of CTs, which I had yesterday, as she wants to be sure that the "cysts" they saw in my liver were in fact cysts. I will collect the scans tomorrow and see what the report says and hope that they are cysts! Know that the surgery is no walk in the park, but that you do adjust. Fingers crossed for your MRI.Hugs,Chrissy, Australia

I just wanted to tell both of you that I am praying and hoping for good test results. Please let us know when you find out. My mother was diagnosed Dec 06. She is still cancer free as far as we know. Her last Ct scan was in Feb this year and shows no signs of cancer. She had chemo and radiation and was a stage 3. God Bless you both !! Pat

Dear Evelyn,

My husband was stage 1 and he received ERM and PDT from Dr. Canto at Johns Hopkins in 2006. He did not have surgery and has been cancer free for over 1.5 years. Let me know if you are truly Stage 1 and I can give you more information regarding these less evasive treatments. It is important that you only have the cancer in the mucosal/limited submucosal, to have the option for these other treatments.

I will be thinking of you through this difficult time. Just know you are not alone. There are many people here to support you!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes. I am in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and I guess our care system is alittle bit different from that of The United States. I have my MRI only on May 28, but when I called the surgeon, they had just received a fax from our Cancer Clinic and I have to go to the Clinic on May 5. I do understand the first visit is only for information purposes, but at least the ball is rolling. I also understand any form of cancer is difficult, alot of questions, and sometimes no answers. Medicine has improved a great deal since my sister died of ovarian cancer 22 years ago, and my dad of liver cancer 10 years ago. My sister was not guite 41yrs old and my dad 81, but it was very hard to see them go this way and I guess that is why it scares me, but I must be hopeful and strong and fight until I can fight no more. I will keep updates as it goes. Take care. Evelyn

Saw my cancer doctor today. My cancer has spread to 1 lymnoid and they do not know how far into the esophagh wall it has gone. . They did say it is not at the beginning stages, and if the adrenal gland spot turns out to be cancer, surgery is out of the question, so now we wait until May 28 for that answer, when I have my MRI. My chemo starts on Monday May 12, and then we shall see. I've read alot here so I know it is a long hual, but I am still hopeful. You have all been so strong and have given me hope, this site has helped alot, to know I am not alone means alot. I will keep you all updated as best I can. Thank you all for the knowledge you have given me. Evelyn

Well, my Chemo is postphoned until Friday, May 16. I see the cancer doctor, on May 12, Monday. I will have th PPIC put in and see a CCAC worker, and a Social Worker, for emotional support. With my Chemo I will be sent home with a Home Infusion pump, so there will be alot of adjustments to be made. So far I feel good. I will try to keep updates as it goes. Evelyn
