Due to the high incidence of stroke in our family, she went to the ER. That night they told her it was a stroke, but the next morning, the neurologist said it was, in fact, a malignant brain tumor. We are in a rural area, so that afternoon, she was transferred to a hosptial 2 hours away. She had surgery on April 2, with complete resection, right parietal, diagnosed as GBM4. To say we were in utter shock is an understatement. But she came through surgery great, no deficits, was released 48 hours later. She has been doing great since. We were having a bit of a hard time arranging treatments, as her neurosurgeon and oncologist are 2 hours away, but we have finally arranged her radiation and chemo to begin next week. We have a very small family, but a very large faith. I thank the Lord everyday for how He has cared for her so far. I also thank Him for leading me to this message board, as I have been visiting here several times a day since her diagnosis, but had not posted yet. I'm sure it's even harder to cope when you have to travel such a long distance for treatment. The radiation is so important to prolonging her life. As you've probably read, it gets hard toward the end of the rad treatment, but they are still considered the primary treatment (after surgery, of course) for brain cancer. Make sure she knows any ill effects from it will likely diminish over time. Does she have any deficits post surgery? My tumor was right occipital/parietal and I have vision loss left eye and poor balance at times. She is only a few years older than me, so we are virtually peers. Best of luck, Sue. mbg53 Fri, 02 May 2008 00:00:00 GMT Best of luck to you.  My mother also 57 was diagnosed Dec 07 with Anaplastic Astrocytoma III.  We also had to travel almost two hours to NYC for her treatments.  It was well worth it.  We just had her MRI and the results were great.  I wish you and your family the best.  Thoughts and prayers are with you. faith11 Fri, 02 May 2008 00:00:00 GMT I too travel a great distance for follow-through and maintanence. We decided to go to UCLA after my initial rad/chemo. It is at least 2 - 2 1/2 hours depending on traffic. One time it took us 5hrs both ways. After that, we drive in and spend the night at a hotel and drive home after appointment.
