It was 2 or 3 weeks before my mucus situation started to improve (and I think thats about average?). Once it starts to improve, it goes away fairly quickly.Mike

The salt and soda gargle also helps break it up. Mucus was a HUGE issue for my hubby. It lasted 2-3 weeks and was replaced by dry mouth. Keep the mouth moist when this happens or he'll get sores possibly. All the Biotene products mentioned on this site helped my husband tremendously. Mucinex helps some too. Cough syrup with guafensin helped a little. Is he having adjuvant? My hubby just completed round two of adjuvant but he has nasopharyngeal c and that his protocol.Good luck,

RE: another mucous question

He had 9 weeks of induction chemo - taxotere, cisplatin, 5-fu and erbitux. Started the day after thanksgiving and ended on valentines day. He had a delay b4 christmas because he ended up being hospitalized with internal bleeding caused by the chemo. At that point they reduced the amount of chemo. He was doing a clinical trial at dana-farber in boston. He finished rad treatments almost 2 weeks ago.He tried the honey...he said it tasted horrible and burned his mouth and throat...then he threw up! So I guess it didnt work for him ;-)He is using tussin syrup along with gargling and rinsing with Alkalol. He dilutes the alkalol.Hopefully the mucous will get better in the next week. Thank you all for your response!~meesh

RE: another mucous question

I suffered with the mucus for months and then my primary care physician prescribed Diflucan which is used for yeast infections. Within 5 days after crushing the first pill and putting it in my feeding tube, the mucus began to clear up and was almost gone.
